This role is a part time (0.5 WTE) secondment position and is fixed term for 6 months. This opportunity is ideal for Allied health professionals, across the 14 professions and pharmacists, nurses, midwives, doctors, psychologists and healthcare scientists who are keen to increase their leadership and transformational change capabilities.

NHS Horizons is a specialist innovation unit within the Improvement Directorate. Its work focuses on:

  • Convening spaces (both face-to-face and virtual) where people with diverse views and experiences share learning and plan for large scale change in complex environments.
  • Building the capability of change agents across the system. We focus on change agency (the power to make a positive difference) which is different to innovation and improvement but boosts both.
  • Promoting the spread and scale of specific innovations, new ways of thinking and working and new methods and frameworks for change, in line with the priorities of NHS England, NHS Improvement and the other organisations that commission our work.
  • NHS Horizons supports leaders at every level of the NHS system in their change efforts, as well as other ALBs, government departments and leaders of change in other healthcare systems globally.

Simultaneously, NHS Horizons is developing an innovation business model, which will enable it to service direct commissions from stakeholders within NHS England and the wider health and care systems, on a cost recovery basis.

Examples of NHS Horizons’ current priority programmes of work include:

  • The Exchange engagement programme across the entire organisation
  • Working with the National Immunisation programme team to improve engagement and connectivity to reduce health inequalities and increase equitable access to vaccination
  • Convening a community of learning with the improvement leaders of the large-scale vaccination centres to share emergent good practice and learning and enhance their relationships and networks
  • Supporting the People Directorate to develop and implement the NHS People Plan
  • Crowdsourcing as a methodology for convening ideas and effecting large scale change
  • Increasing the virtual capabilities of the organisation through training, development and partnerships with other teams in particular the use of virtual facilitation as a means for large scale change and developing communities of practice
  • The (virtual) School for Change Agents which supports point of care workforce to build their skills and power to make change happen. Our 2021 School was our biggest yet, with lots of positive outcomes reported

To support and improve its NHS programmes, NHS Horizons additionally undertakes commissions for organisations in other countries mostly on a virtual basis. In the past year, we have worked with teams and systems in all the home nations, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Sweden, Denmark and pan-European organisations.

It is a very interesting time to join Horizons as a Clinical Associate (Project Manager) to help us build the clinical transformational capability across the NHS.

This opportunity is ideal for allied health professionals (across the 14 professions), pharmacists, nurses, midwives, doctors, psychologists and healthcare scientists who are keen to increase their leadership and transformational change capabilities. They should be interested in quality improvement and want to bring that knowledge to improve their practice. In return, we offer the opportunity for the post-holder to develop their understanding and practice in large-scale, transformational change. We anticipate that the post-holder will be able to integrate their learning back into their clinical practice during and at the end of their time with Horizons

The post will be key for developing our clinical model for the future.

The post holder (in addition to the generic job specification) will:

  • Act as a project manager and oversee the successful delivery of at least one core project (or element of a project) working with colleagues within Horizons, other teams within NHS England/Improvement and the wider NHS and care sector
  • Provide a clinical perspective to projects led by the Horizons team that support the recovery of health and care
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of learning approaches
  • Work alongside improvement experts, gaining experience of system leadership and large scale transformation.
  • Develop their social influence approach and virtual collaboration capability

The reason for the fixed term of your contract is short-term time limited project. The part time secondment contract is to encourage reciprocal learning.

As part of the secondment opportunity, the post holder will be encouraged to develop their own skills and work on a programme of activity that they can apply during and/or on their return to their substantive role.

The hours offered will be on a part time basis up to 0.5 WTE with the intention that the post holder will continue clinical duties in their current organisation so line manager support for this opportunity will be essential.
