The Role:        

We have long term placement opportunities available Band 6 Physiotherapist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust , specifically providing the following:

  • To provide a high standard physiotherapy service to patients in the  Acute General Medicine.
  • Assesses and treat own workload of patients, who may have a complex presentation, and maintain accurate records, as an autonomous practitioner.
  • Supervise and teach recently qualified physiotherapists/therapy assistants//students, and members of MDT.
  • Undertake evidence-based projects, including recommendations for change in practice and participation in departmental research and audit.
  • Deputise for senior staff in operational management.
  • To support weekend and out of hours rotas.

The John Radcliffe Hospital (JR) is Oxfordshire's main accident and emergency site. The JR provides acute medical and surgical services including trauma, intensive care and cardiothoracic services. It is situated in Headington, about three miles east of Oxford city centre. It is the largest of the Trust's hospitals, covering around 66 acres, and includes: 

  • Children's Hospital
  • Eye Hospital
  • Heart Centre
  • West Wing
  • Women's Centre

The John Radcliffe site also houses many departments of Oxford University Medical School, is home to the George Pickering Education Centre and base for most medical students who are trained throughout the Trust.

Main Responsibilities :

General:

  • To carry out assessments and treatments, with moderate and repeated physical effort on a daily basis.
  • To comply with the Trust’s Manual Handling Policy and local therapeutic handling guidelines.
  • To work in an environment where the work patterns may be disrupted by frequent demands from patients, clinical staff, students and administrative support staff.
  • To sensitively deal with distressing or emotional circumstances regarding patient care such as realistic expectations of rehabilitation outcome.

Clinical responsibilities :

  • To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects own work.
  • To carry out assessment of patients as an autonomous practitioner, including those with diverse or complex presentations/multiple pathologies, using clinical reasoning skills and knowledge of evidence based practice to determine the appropriate care plan by utilising a wide range of treatment skills.
  • To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses in a wide range of conditions including those with a complex presentation, with occasional guidance from specialist physiotherapists.

Management:

  • To be responsible for competent use and maintenance reporting of all equipment used including but not limited to electrotherapy, gym equipment, hoists, Bird ventilators, saturation monitors and patient appliances, and to ensure that junior staff/students and assistants attain competency prior to use.
  • To assist in the supervision, teaching and appraisal of junior staff and assistants on a daily basis.
  • To be responsible for the operational management in the absence of senior staff or as required.

Research and audit:

  • To participate in the department’s ongoing audit and appropriate work related research/evaluation projects.
  • To keep abreast of evidenced based practice in the clinical area by use of relevant reading, attendance at in-service training, external courses and database searches.
  • To ensure good working knowledge of national and local standards and monitor quality as appropriate.
