Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Bedford Hospital & Luton & Dunstable Hospital
£20,330 - £21,777 pa

It is an exciting time to join the newly formed Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

We run two busy hospital sites in Bedford and Luton. Our 7,500 staff provide high quality care for a growing population of around 700,000 across Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas.

You will be joining a friendly, high performing Trust committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of staff. As one of the largest NHS Trusts in our region you will have access to a programme of high quality training and development to help you grow your career. Travel between hospital sites may be required.

We have state-of-the art facilities placing us at the heart of cutting edge health care. The Trust continues to be committed to delivering the best patient care using the best clinical knowledge and technology available.

The Nursing Associate role has been designed to help build the capacity of the nursing workforce, bridging the gap between qualified Nurses and Health Care Assistants. Nursing associates are proving to be a successful addition to our nursing team and we are now looking to offer the exciting opportunity to undertake the training within our organisation.

The training is offered as an apprenticeship and we are looking to recruit from both our current employees and the wider community.

The next programme will start in February 2022. The Student Nursing Associate Apprenticeship is a two year programme leading to a Level 5, foundation degree qualification and professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). It can be the first step towards qualifying as a Registered Nurse. It is a training programme that combines both academic and work-based learning covering the physical, psychological and public health aspects of care, from pre-conception to end of life.

Successful candidates will initially be employed into a substantive healthcare role and will be seconded for 2 years to complete the apprenticeship. All apprentices will be offered employment as a Nursing Associate on successful completion of the course. During the programme the Student Nursing Associates (TNAs) will be employed on a Band 3 salary.

The programme is structured and will give experience in a wide variety of placements across the breadth of health and social care sectors and in different organisations with the aim of giving trainees the widest exposure to healthcare. The academic aspect of the course will be provided by the University of Suffolk. Please note that apprentices will not be expected to travel to Suffolk to attend university. The university tuition costs for the programme are fully funded.

Apprentices will rotate into placements within their own organisation, but will also need to rotate across care organisations within our local partnership. Apprentices will attend university and alternative placements and in addition will have a base placement where they will complete their full-time employment hours. Whilst in their base placement apprentices will have protected time to learn necessary practical skills.

In order to apply you must meet the following criteria:

  • Level 2 Functional/Key Skills in English and Maths (not entry level 2) or GCSE English Language & Maths at Grade A-C /4-9 or equivalent. Evidence/proof of certificates will be required if shortlisted for an interview
  • The ability to study at Diploma level and a commitment to complete a Foundation Degree Apprenticeship
  • The applicant will have a Care certificate or be expected to obtain one during the first three months of the TNA programme

Under the supporting information section on the application form, please ensure that you provide a detailed summary on how you meet the criteria for this apprenticeship programme. If you could also confirm whether your preference of base site would be Luton, Bedford, or whether you would be happy to work within either location.
