Consultant Geriatrician

Based at Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, SE Wales

Full Time (10 Sessions)

Anticipated Start Date: ASAP

Closing Date for Applications: Midnight on 11th October 2021

This substantive consultant post will be based in Abergavenny alongside 5 Consultant Geriatricians (with specialist interest in stroke, orthogeriatrics, nutrition and Parkinson's disease) working within Nevill Hall Hospital. The department is designed and supported with a team of; Clinical Nurse Specialists, Non Training and Training grade doctors, physician associates, Therapists and Pharmacists. The team prides itself on providing high quality Acute Medical care and comprehensive geriatric assessments for the elderly, which is consultant led with good multi-disciplinary working. We actively support flexible working and several colleagues work 4 day weeks and several have specialist interests outside of COTE which are encouraged and supported by the directorate. COTE CCT is ideal, but candidates with GIM CCT and an interest or experience in COTE will be welcome to apply.

With a large elderly population we have seen a constant demand to expand our service. The planned developments will see improved partnership working with our primary care and community partners to ensure the Elderly are treated at home or in the most appropriate place. There is close joint working with Frailty teams and front end geriatrics. Our services will be developed using best practice principals with regard to acute medical care of older people.

The potential candidate will work with an enthusiastic team. They will care for a mixture of GIM and COTE patients. There are opportunities for outpatient clinics and we would welcome expertise to generate new clinics to see patients promptly and avoid acute hospital admission. E.g. syncope, falls and good old fashioned generalist clinics. There would be an expectation to be part of the physician of the day on call rota with a selected medical take and overnight on call for general medicine in the Grange University Hospital (the hospital has specialty consultant on call for respiratory, gastroenterology and cardiology, but infrequent telephone advice is required for general medical problems that do not fit the single organ model)

The Clinical Futures Care of The Elderly and GIM model will improve the patient experience, so the ideal candidate can have a key role to play in shaping this service joining our existing team for generalists and elderly services comprising experienced geriatricians, discharge co-ordinators, nursing staff, and rehab staff all of whom are dedicated to provide good quality patient care. The role of geriatricians and other professionals who specialise in care of older people is crucial in implementing best practice in terms of leadership, education and training.

The Health Board actively supports consultant doctors to undertake funded 3 month formal sabbaticals through an annual application process.

Free parking is available across all Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Sites.

  • Enhanced check with barred list information, including an adults barred list check
