Medical Director

Royal Free Hospital Business Unit

An exciting opportunity has arisen for one of our senior clinical leaders to become the next medical director for the Royal Free Hospital (RFH) Business Unit. Reporting to the RFH Chief Executive, with a professional accountability to the Group Chief Medical Officer, the post holder is accountable for contributing to and implementing group strategy. The medical director is a core member of the hospital unit leadership team and will provide leadership to the associated medical workforce.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • To ensure that the medical workforce demonstrates compassionate and inclusive leadership and has a focus on patient safety and experience through promotion of a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
  • Work strategically with the hospital unit Director of Nursing to enhance patient experience, quality of care and ensure patient safety.
  • To ensure effective systems are in place to monitor and improve clinical, operational and financial performance of medical teams and individuals.
  • Have group wide responsibility to promote research, working jointly with the Chief Medical Officer, research theme leads and the Director of Research and Development.
  • Promote and support the design work of Clinical Practice Groups (CPGs) and lead the local interpretation implementation of clinical guidelines and managing to a high standard from a medical and patient safety perspective.

Successful candidates will need strategic and operational experience at a senior level within the NHS with a strong focus on transformational leadership, service improvement, stakeholder engagement and championing excellent patient care. We are looking for a natural leader who is inclusive, and has the ability to deliver through others whilst building excellent relationships both internally and externally. The successful candidate will need to be able to work both within their hospital unit and across the group to ensure consistency of purpose and high quality care.

The post attracts 6 programmed activities (PAs). This PA / hours allocation is based on current service needs and may change depending on service needs. The position is for a 3 year period.
