The Newcastle Psychiatric Liaison Team is looking to recruit an enthusiastic, experienced Clinical Psychologist to provide consultant level input into the service. This is a newly developed post, so there is scope for the post holder to work with the existing senior MDT and the Psychological Services Associate Director for Central Access CBU to shape it in line with the ethos and strategic direction of the service. There is funding for the role for 3 days per week, 9 – 5pm.

The successful candidate will work alongside the MDT which includes consultant psychiatrists, nurse consultant, pharmacist, mental health nurses and junior doctors specialising in the treatment and assessment of adults with mental health needs. Based on the Leazes Wing at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), the team works closely with colleagues in Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals Trust (NuTH). The RVI is a regional trauma centre dealing with highly complex cases and this post will provide the opportunity to evaluate the impact and added value of having a Consultant Psychologist as part of the team.

Working across the entire acute hospital, the team acts as the core link between the mental health and acute trust advocating for the mental health needs of patients. The team operates 24/7, supporting wards in the management of patients admitted to the RVI and Freeman Hospital who have a mental disorder and supporting with potentially complex decisions around mental capacity. The team works with people with a diverse range of mental health issues. This includes those presenting as high risk coming into the emergency department, those with co-morbid physical and mental health problems, and people with organic illnesses including dementia and delirium.

The successful candidate will be expected to have considerable experience of working in acute/crisis teams or to be able to clearly demonstrate relevant transferable skills they have gained in their career so far.
