Telephone Triage - Clinical Assessment Service (CAS)

Clinical Practitioners and Telephone Triage Practitioners for GM Integrated Urgent Care Clinical Assessment Service (CAS) 

This service focuses on all NHS111 and/or 999 cases identified as suitable for Primary Care input. Cases are automatically sent to the single instance of Adastra from which the CAS clinician can forward as appropriate. 

In summary:

  • All calls are triaged within in target times and signposted to the most appropriate service.
  • Video consultation when necessary, training will be provided.
  • If calls are assessed as still requiring an ambulance, the clinician will follow the agreed pathway to arrange.

Hours of Provision

The service is commissioned to run for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. 

Scope of Practice

The practitioners required for the service are:

  • General Practitioners.  
  • Clinical Practitioners
  • Telephone Triage Practitioners

Roles and Responsibilities

Job description to follow but basic service expectation involves:

  • Triage calls which have been assessed as appropriate referrals.
  • Assess appropriate outcome such as signposting to other services, refer for treatment centre appointment, home visiting.
  • Use video consultation when necessary or depending on competency.
  • Provide information and advice on prescribed or over-the-counter medication, side-effects, and interactions.
  • Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care.
  • Support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles and apply the principles of self-care.
  • Assess, identify, and refer patients presenting with mental health needs in accordance with the NSF for Mental Health if competent to do so, otherwise act as a signpost to appropriate assessments such as rapid access mental health teams.
  • Promote and deliver evidence-based care for patients presenting with a range of both minor and more significant, complex illnesses.
  • Maintain competence in clinical practice in line with the practitioner’s professional regulatory body in line with regulations and revalidation requirements.
  • Adapt to clinical services which may be new, innovative, and challenging at times with a flexible approach to learning the skills required to perform optimally in the role.

Induction will include:

  1. Basic Mastercall induction
  2. Introduction and training on proprietary Clinical Systems (if needed)
  3. Familiarisation with SOPs
  4. Training on Video Consultation should this be required.   


Stockport base but could be variable or home working – after a period of consolidation.
