An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse to join the inpatient pain team. We are looking for an interested, motivated and skilled individual who will be based within the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital of Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals. The post will be at band 6 and offer the opportunity to develop skills in all aspects of pain management for inpatients.

The pain service provides advice and consultancy to patients, carers and the multidisciplinary team, and is responsible for the planning, delivery and evaluation of all aspects of pain management. Service development, evaluation, audit, and education are integral to the role.


The inpatient pain service is available to all inpatients from all specialties. The service covers 6 days per week. The post will be predominantly based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and involve working with adults.

Essential Requirements

  • Registered nurse (adult)
  • NMC registration
  • Diploma/Degree level study, or equivalent specialist study / experience.
  • Some post registration experience within related specialist area of practice.
  • Extended clinical practice underpinned by training supervision & assessment.
  • Evidence of ongoing continuous professional development.
  • Evidence of good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Effective report writing skills
  • Motivation and enthusiasm
  • Able to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements for mentorship if relevant to role.
  • Effective organisation and time management skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Knowledge of adult/child safeguarding.


Desirable requirements

  • Research or audit experience.
  • Change management skills and involvement in project work.
  • Evidence of effective leadership skills/knowledge e.g. leadership course
  • Evidence of contribution towards education and training programmes.
