Locum Consultant in Adult Intensive Care Medicine

UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS OF LEICESTER NHS TRUST

UHL is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national, and international population. We serve the one million residents of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and specialist services over a much wider area. Applications are invited for enthusiastic and highly motivated Locum Consultant in intensive care medicine to join our expanding team. Following planned service reconfiguration in UHL, it is expected that the unit will expand to 33 beds admitting in excess of 2000 patients per year with an increase in full time equivalent Intensive care consultants to 22. This post will support the increase in activity.

The Government announced in 2019 that Leicester’s Hospitals will be getting £450m of capital investment over the next 5 years to complete our investment and reconfiguration plans. The £450m programme includes two ‘super’ intensive care units with 100 beds in total, almost double the current number, a major planned care Treatment Centre at the Glenfield Hospital and modernised wards, operating theatres and imaging facilities.

The scope of surgical practice at the hospitals offers exciting and varied clinical opportunities for consultants in intensive care medicine, anaesthesia, respiratory medicine and cardiology there is continued support for non-clinical professional activities both inside and outside the trust. The successful candidate with dual anaesthesia accreditation will provide general anaesthetic care across site and help with the reconfiguration and relocation of surgical specialties.

Single and dual ICM specialists are invited to apply for this job, there will be flexibility to accommodate different job plan needs.

The successful applicant will fulfil their ICM duties in Glenfield hospital. The intensive care unit in Glenfield provides tertiary services in cardiothoracic surgery: Also vascular surgery, out of hospital cardiac arrest, primary PCI and interventional cardiology. General ICM skills are mandatory, support will be provided to develop advanced tertiary skills. Glenfield is the first ECMO centre in the UK and is one of 5 commissioned SARF/ECMO centres. There are opportunities for the successful candidate to deliver on and gain further experience and expertise in a variety of specialties.

UHL is fully committed to continuing medical education for consultants. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to departmental quality improvement activity and the clinical supervision of postgraduate trainees in Anaesthesia and ICM. The UHL Department of Anaesthesia is committed to working towards the Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation scheme of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

As this post is regulated by the Protection of Children Act 1999, The Criminal Justice Courts Act 2000 and the Care Standards Act 2000 an enhanced police criminal records disclosure will be requested by the Trust in the event of a successful application.
