Oncology Lead Nurse - Band 8a - Macmillian Unit 37.5hpw Permanent

Could you help West Suffolk Hospital to deliver the best quality and safest care to our local community?




The appointee will work the Lead Nurse for Cancer/Senior Operational Manager for Specialist Medicine to lead, and manage, the team within the Macmillan Unit to deliver excellent “personalised cancer care” to our patients. 

You will link with other service areas to ensure standards of care are in line with specialist services and promote the clinical area as a positive area for staff experience.  You will manager the resources effectively including the budget, team members) to include ward staff and the Clinical Nurse Specialist within the Unit), and the quality standards. You would also deliver direct patient care, acting as an expert practitioner and a role model to the whole team.

Your role will include liaising with all health professionals and support staff to ensure patients receive the best services possible.  To fulfil this role you will be highly motivated, a resourceful team player and have extensive experience as a cancer nurse specialist. 

Possession of excellent communication skills, team working and interpersonal skills, coupled with evidence of continuing professional development, is essential.  In this role you will work closely with the matrons within the Trust to ensure that quality indicators are achieved for the Macmillan Unit.


It’s an exciting time to join the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust as we are now planning for a new hospital within the next 5 – 7 years.  This post will therefore include being involved in the developing the future vision for the Unit.  This will provide excellent opportunities in innovation and service improvement.

The successful candidate for this post will be required to apply for a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Disclosure at Enhanced level.

For Band 1 and Band 2 posts, the cost of the DBS Disclosure will be met by the Trust. However, any employees at Band 1 and Band 2 who leave the Trust within six months of commencing their post will have a £10 administration fee deducted from their final salary. For posts at Band 3 and above, the cost of the Disclosure will be met by the appointed employee and deducted in instalments from their salary over a period of three months. If the employee leaves the Trust within three months of commencing their post, any outstanding payments will be deducted from their final pay.
