We are the main provider of hospital care to approximately 750,000 people in Manchester and Trafford and the single biggest provider of specialised services in the North West of England. We are also the lead provider for a significant number of specialised services including Breast Care, Vascular, Cardiac, Respiratory, Urology Cancer, Paediatrics, Women’s Services, Ophthalmology and Genomic Medicine.

Our vision is to improve the health and quality of life of our diverse population by building an organisation that:

  • Excels in quality, safety, patient experience, research, innovation and teaching
  • Attracts, develops and retains great people
  • Is recognised internationally as a leading healthcare provider.

This post is an ideal opportunity for an optometrist to consolidate their knowledge and develop a role within hospital optometry.

Manchester Royal Eye Hospital is a leading teaching eye hospital in the North West region and we are a centre of excellence for ophthalmic care, with over 35 consultant ophthalmologists and a range of sub-specialties. In 2009 the Eye Hospital moved to an impressive new purpose-built hospital.

The optometry department is a major component of the eye hospital's out-patient department. The core optometry services include refraction (routine, diagnostic and paediatric), complex medical contact lens management and low vision rehabilitation. The optometry department also incorporates a large perimetry service and a dispensing optician service. The department has several extended optometrist roles in various ophthalmic disciplines including cataract services, glaucoma, macular treatments, paediatric services (low vision and contact lenses) and acute services.

Previous hospital optometry experience is desirable, although not essential, as in-house training is provided regularly through our highly experienced optometrists. You must be registered with the General Optical Council and hold a degree in Optometry.

In return we will provide a comprehensive induction programme and you will be appraised on a yearly basis with a view to developing knowledge and skills where appropriate.

This is a full time position and some Saturday work will be required.
