SHFT require staff to work effectively together using the Family Approach to achieve better outcomes for adults, children and families. The Trust will support you in this duty by providing ongoing training, support and advice and have a Corporate Safeguarding Team who can be contacted for guidance and the provision of safeguarding supervision.

Applications are invited for three, or more, exciting Locality Care Partnership rotational consultant posts employed by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and working with Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHUT), Rowans Hospice and Solent NHS Trust.

Strong relationships between these organisations, local CCGs and GPs are working to develop a seamless service, for patients & families and support of EoL provision, across the Portsmouth & South East Hampshire locality (PSEH).


Joining the existing three consultants this expanded rotation will serve the community specialist palliative care teams serving South East Hampshire & Portsmouth (34 PAs of consultant time, population c.600k), Queen Alexandra Hospital palliative care team (20 PAs, 1200 beds) and Rowans Hospice services (8 PAs, 19 in-patient beds, H@H, Living Well Centre & other services). You will join the existing medical team including a locum Associate Specialist, Specialist Registrar, two Specialty Doctors, GP VTS and FY2 trainees and established multi-disciplinary Palliative Care teams.


The Rowans Hospice is a 19 bed independent charitable hospice also providing Day Centre, Hospice at Home and other supportive professional and volunteer services on site, in the adjacent Living Well Centre and into the community. The Hospice also provides the base for the Southern Health NHSFT community SPC team and the Solent psychology and bereavement service. The NHS and charitable services based at Rowans Hospice work in partnership with the Solent NHS Trust community SPC team based two miles away on the edge of Portsmouth.


Portsmouth Hospitals University is a key provider of acute care services located at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The trust achieved university status in 2020 It is a cancer centre, home to the Wessex Renal and Transplantation Service and other regional specialist services. There is a strong Research and Innovation team within the trust, complimenting close links with the University of Portsmouth


Off site on call is currently 1 in 5 weekdays and weekends. With recruitment this will fall to 1 in 6 or less. This provides 2nd on-call cover for the Hospice in-patient unit and 1st on for Hospice at Home, community and Portsmouth Hospitals Trust advice calls (experienced Specialty Drs often take these calls).


With an established team of experienced consultants individuals in the early stages of their consultant career would be welcomed and supported as well as more established consultants. Peer support, mentorship (both formal and informal) and a naturally cohesive team provide optimum conditions to develop specialist interests or to take on leadership roles. It is hoped that one successful candidate will develop a role as the Training and Education Lead across the services. Another a role as the Medical Lead for the Palliative Care Service at PHUT. The posts can be tailored to individual interests and needs of the post holder.


All services share active education and training programmes, with excellent educational facilities at The Rowans Hospice and QA Hospital. All teams support co-ordinated multi-professional education in all aspects of end of life care across PSEH.


The area of PSEH is well placed for a choice of urban, rural or coastal lifestyles. There are excellent transport links to London and the rest of the country and ferry links to the Isle of Wight and France. And the weather is great, unless you like snow!
