An exciting opportunity to join the Southampton CAMHS service and be part of a team of consultants and non-medical prescribers within a well-resourced MDT, in a forward looking, progressive, service. The role is full time, split between 0.8 clinical and 0.2 teaching as part of our award-winning teaching team, LTFT applicants may also apply to this post.

The successful applicant will be coming into a post made vacant due to a colleague’s retirement and will be part of a team with five other consultant colleagues and four other non-medical prescribers including consultant nurse colleagues. This means that there is significant opportunity for peer support and cross cover within the service.

Solent NHS Trust has community services in children’s and adult’s physical and mental health and includes a cluster of children’s mental health teams in Southampton. We have close and collaborative relationships with commissioners, the Local Authority, Community Paediatric Services, Acute Paediatric and ED services as well as the in-house Paediatric Liaison team in University Hospitals Southampton. We offer exciting and innovative services including the CAMHS team, the Autism assessment Pathway, MHSTs, and the newly started CAMHS Inreach Team to work within ED and across the Paediatric wards at UHS. We haveongoing joint training forums and regular meetings with acute paediatric colleagues.

In addition Solent contributes to the Building Resilience and Strength service (BRS); this service is a crisis service, tripartite funded from health, education and children’s services, and supports the most vulnerable children in crisis in all three areas across the city, CAMHS and BRS work very closely together on the most complex and high risk cases in order to provide more intensive support. The BRS is also the Southampton base from which FCAMHS (Forensic CAMHS) input is provided on behalf of the Hants & IoW FCAMHS Team.

Southampton CAMHS is well advanced into its transformation journey and, working closely with commissioners to secure additional funding. The service has a multidisciplinary senior leadership team which are dedicated to offering a high quality service to our children, young people and families. We have clear pathways in the service, including an MDT assessment clinic and a range of evidence- based interventions. We are proud of our DBT programme we have established for children and young people with significant risk relating to mental health difficulties and emotional dysregulation. As a system, we have developed clear transition pathways and governance around these. We have also formed close partnerships with third sector partners (e.g. No Limits, Yellow Door) within the team and on the patient pathway – from triage to interventions. The results of our last CQC inspection in 2019 was overall “good” with outstanding for “caring”.

We have recently developed our neurodevelopmental offer to be part of a city-wide partner with good engagement with other agencies in the city to support children and young people before assessment as well as during and after diagnosis of ADHD. We also work closely with the autism assessment service alongside CAMHS and are streamlining the assessments between these two services.

We have a strong working relationship with the University Hospital Southampton and Children’s Social Care in place with pathways around delayed discharges for young people to enable packages of care in the community to be set up or enable in-reach to the hospital whilst waiting for a tier four bed. We have close working relationships with the new care models provider collaborative in the region with innovative developments and investment into crisis pathways coming through that service.

Southampton CAMHS remains committed to being a local centre of excellence for training and education – hosting undergraduate medical students, postgraduate medical trainees from FY – ST4-6 levels, as well as trainee nurses and trainee psychologists. The GMC undertook a regional review of UME & PGME training in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry in Solent (focusing on Southampton CAMHS) and gave plaudits to the education and training on offer.

We also host the regional academic centre in CAP, with a senior academic in CAP (a Professor) and have close links with the School of Psychology as well as the Mental Health Group in the School of Medicine. We have close links to the University of Southampton Psychology Research team, particularly around Neurodevelopmental disorders and encourage research interests within the team.
