Consultant in Anaesthetics - General

Applications are invited for the position of a Consultant in Anaesthesia at a busy District General Hospital in Suffolk. The successful applicant will join a cohesive, forward-thinking department of 32 Consultants, 15 trainees, 9 SAS doctors, 2 Anaesthesia Associates, 2 Advanced Critical Care Practitioners and 1 FY1 doctor.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds has a reputation for friendliness and cooperation and an outstanding reputation for quality and training. This post is a replacement position due to retirement. This is an exciting time to join the West Suffolk Hospital Department of Anaesthesia with renovations of inpatient theatres and the critical care unit, and expansion of inpatient theatres due for completion in Autumn 2021. There is also a co-production team in place for future planning of a new hospital development.

The successful candidate will take a full part in the diverse workload of the Anaesthetic Department working in a range of surgical specialties including ENT, trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology and general surgery. An interest in Peri-Operative Medicine is desirable but not essential. Teaching is a fundament part of the consultant role, with the Cambridge Graduate Medical Course based at the hospital and anaesthetic trainees of all grades on rotation.

This will be a 10.5 PA contract for the provision of 6 clinical sessions per week with a 1:13 commitment to non-resident combined emergency theatre and obstetric on-call.

Candidates should be on or eligible for inclusion onto the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthesia or be within 6 months of their expected date of obtaining a CCT at the time of the interview.

West Suffolk Hospital is a busy and popular hospital, serving a population of 280,000. Situated in the heart of East Anglia, the cathedral town of Bury St Edmunds is a pleasant place to live and work, providing sophisticated facilities in a traditional and unspoilt rural town setting. There is also easy access to the Midlands, London and the East Coast.
