Are you ready to contribute to the development of our new service and the continuing professionalisation of adult critical care transfer across Wales?

Planning to launch August 2021, the Adult Critical Care Transfer Service (ACCTS) Cymru is a road-based service being developed to ensure the uninterrupted provision of critical care for adult patients requiring inter-facility transfer; for uplift of care and tertiary specialty input, planned repatriation back to their local facility and to support network-wide management of critical care capacity. ACCTS is being commissioned to complement the existing EMRTS teams, who will continue to provide pre-hospital critical care and time-critical / aeromedical inter-facility transfers.

We are seeking to recruit critical care transfer assistants who will form a crucial part of our critical care transfer teams, taking on a combined driving and healthcare support worker role. As an experienced emergency ambulance driver with an interest in undertaking a new and varied role, you’ll receive ongoing training in medical equipment preparedness and develop an active involvement at the bedside in the preparation of critically ill patients for safe transfer. As a vital member of a small team alongside a retrieval and transfer physician and practitioner, you’ll support the team in all aspects of their work by ensuring that their needs and those of the patient are met at all times, by anticipation and preparedness as your experience grows.

Critical care is a process and not a location, so when the service is called upon to transfer patients with complex clinical needs, it is vital our team can ensure the uninterrupted provision of critical care throughout the patient journey. The critical care transfer assistant plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of the patient and team throughout the transfer, from ensuring preparedness of vehicle and equipment before deployment, supporting the team in the movement and set up of equipment as necessary, and ensuring that all journeys are carried out smoothly and safely with due regard to the requirements stipulated at the time.

Our bespoke critical care transfer vehicles will fall into category C1, so you’ll need a proven track record of handling vehicles in this category, as well as an exemplary driving record. Extensive experience of ambulance operations is also essential, as is an IHCD or CERAD qualification in emergency driving, whether achieved within the public, private or voluntary sector. This baseline level of experience is vital to give insight into the risks and hazards of the transfer environment that we will build on with our bespoke induction and training programme. We’ll ask you to share your experiences of critical care transfers with the wider team so we can all continue to learn, develop and provide a better service to our patients and the wider critical care network.

An understanding of the interplay of technical and non-technical skills complements the critical care transfer assistant skillset. The successful applicant will clearly demonstrate how they actively incorporate non-technical skills, also referred to as human factors, into their day-to-day practice. The transfer environment is potentially hazardous, even for an experienced team who regularly work and train together within a well-designed system; stress, fatigue, motion and increased background noise are unavoidable factors which can contribute to impaired decision making and increased risk to patient safety.
