NHS England have established a national network of seven NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliances (GMSA) to support the systematic embedding of genomics into mainstream. The systematic application of genomic technologies has the potential to transform patient’s lives through quicker
diagnosis and personalised medicine and care plans which are better suited and tailored to treat the underlying cause.

The new GMS Alliances (GMSA) will build on the work of the 100,000 Genomes Project and that of the existing Genomic Laboratory Hubs (GLH), mapping to the same geographies as these entities.

Together, the GMSA and GLHs form the new national NHS Genomic Medicine Service to ensure patients fully benefit from advances in genomics, bringing together a national test directory and
equitable access to standardised testing pathways with exciting clinical opportunities afforded by new detailed understanding about peoples underlying genetic profiles.

The GMS Alliances will focus on reducing unwarranted variation and delivering the NHS Long Term Plan commitments to make demonstrable improvements to outcomes for our patients and the populations we serve. To do so will require a collaborative approach, enabling active contributions
from patients, the whole multi-professional team across the care system – medics, nurses, midwifes, pharmacists, other allied health professionals, healthcare scientists – and academics. The GMSAs will thus have a critical role in facilitating strong collaborations across large geographies, working with patients and the public to build trust in genomics, and providing clinical leadership to enable the multi-professional workforce to use genomics safely, effectively and efficiently.

NHS South East Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (SE GMSA) The South East GMSA will follow on from the successful work of the South London Genomic Medicine Centre in delivering the 100k Genome Project and the South East Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH). The South East GMSA maps to the geographic footprint of our South East GLH, including NHS providers and partner entities across South London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. The South East GLH and GMSA will work in close alignment to deliver equitable and consistent access to genomic testing and end-to-end care pathways across our geography.

Pharmacy will play an essential role in GMS Alliances and across the national Genomic Medicine Service (GMS). The involvement of pharmacists and the broader pharmacy workforce will be critical to establishing the integral link between genomic testing, the use and optimisation of medicines and access to personalised treatments.

To support this exciting work, the seven GMSAs across England are each appointing a Pharmacy Lead to provide professional leadership at a regional and national level. These posts present an opportunity at a regional level for a pharmacist with relevant leadership skills and expertise to shape
the direction of genomics within pharmacy and, importantly, to influence the development of the role of pharmacy within mainstreamed genomic medicine at a regional and national level.

As a key member of our South East GMSA central clinical leadership team, our Pharmacy Lead will lead on the delivery of a transformational programme of change to address equity of access to testing and personalised treatments through new models of care and to support the education and development needs of the pharmacy workforce to safely and effectively adopt genomics in to their practice.

This post is suitable for a for an existing Consultant Pharmacist or an experienced clinical pharmacist who wishes to specialise in genomics and is willing to work towards achieving Consultant Pharmacist credentialing within 12 months. We are primarily looking for applicants with a demonstrably strong clinical background, system leadership skills and with the ability to influence, engage and work collaboratively across a large geography and a range of seniority, specialties and professions to
achieve our aims.
