Clinical Psychologist in General Medicine, Pain and HIV

Department of Medical Psychology – Band 7 (1 WTE)

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated clinical psychologist to join our well established Department of Medical Psychology. Although this is a full time post we are happy to consider a job share or applications for part time work.

The post-holder will be a member of a friendly and psychologically minded team, offering psychological support to our general medical service, the HIV team and the pain management MDT. The general medical work involves working with people referred by a wide range of medical consultants and therefore makes it a very interesting and varied post. The role will also include a number of sessions working alongside an 8b psychologist offering psychological input to the HIV service, as well as the opportunity to work alongside a small team of psychologists working within the pain management MDT. The latter part of the post includes working on a pain management programme, as well as offering individual work. This post therefore offers the change to develop both generic skills, as well as offering the chance to develop areas of specialist expertise.

We are linked to one of the largest acute trusts in the country (University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust) and this provides us with excellent opportunities for collaborative clinical work, teaching and personal development.

This post will be based mainly at Leicester General Hospital, with some sessions at Leicester Royal Infirmary. The Department currently comprises ten clinical psychologists and the department is continually developing and growing. We have excellent admin and clerical support. We have good links with the Leicester DClinPsy course and regularly attract trainees on placement.

This post provides a great opportunity to work in a supportive environment with a rewarding and challenging client group. The department is friendly, supportive and flexible. We take supervision and professional support seriously and meet regularly for case presentations, clinical governance and business meetings. We also have a monthly peer group meeting and regular time-out to enable reflection and service development.

Leicester is a thriving multi-cultural city with good arts and sporting facilities that enjoys excellent motorway links to other major cities and easy access to the surrounding countryside.

For an informal discussion or to arrange a visit, please contact Laura Ambrose (Consultant Clinical Psychologist) on 0116 295 4555.

We are committed to providing the best care that we can to our patients, and so some of our roles involve a Maths and English assessment. Where this is so, details will be shared with you as part of the recruitment process.

Details of our benefits, pledge and other important information about the application process, and working for us is contained in the documents linked to our advert.

For areas where our teams work to staffing rosters, rosters are set in advance at a team level and you will be joining an established roster. Your rostered shifts will be confirmed to you when arranging your start date. We will consider requests to vary working patterns in line with our flexible working policy.

To make the most of your application, we may consider successful applicants for vacancies for the same post in different locations where this is appropriate and meets our mutual requirements.

For all substantive roles the appointment of every new member of staff (excluding medical and dental staff) to a post is subject to a 6 month probationary period, details of which are in our Probation Policy.

We aim to develop a workforce that reflects our service users. To this end we actively implement equal opportunities in employment and service delivery and seek people who share our commitment. We strongly encourage applications from all sections of the community, particularly from underrepresented groups, including members of our black and minority ethnic communities. All jobs will require permission to work in the UK.

For all jobs the cost of undertaking a DBS disclosure at the required level will be met by the individual. This will be deducted from salary following commencement.

Requests from applicants to work alternative hours to those advertised may be considered.

Applicants who are currently ‘at risk’ within the local NHS, and meeting essential criteria will be given preference for interview over any other candidates who may apply for this post.
