The commitment of our 17,100 staff is key to our success. We are one of the largest local employers and we aim to develop and support all our staff so they are able to deliver high quality, safe and efficient care. The 2018 NHS staff survey results show that we have one of the most engaged and motivated workforces in the NHS. We know this has a positive impact on the care provided to our patients.

Guy’s & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is one the UK's busiest and most successful foundation trusts, with a strong reputation for clinical excellence and high-quality care. Our Trust is made up of two of London's best known teaching hospitals – St Thomas' Hospital and Guy's Hospital – and London's two specialist heart and lung hospitals, Royal Brompton and Harefield. Our hospitals have a long and proud history, dating back almost 900 years, and have been at the forefront of medical progress and innovation since they were founded. We continue to build on these traditions and have a reputation for clinical, teaching and research excellence. We are part of King's Health Partners, one of only eight academic health sciences centres in England.

Evelina London Women’s & Children’s Healthcare is a Clinical Group of Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, operating under a formal scheme of delegation from the Trust Board. Our specialist children’s hospital is the second largest in London, rated by the CQC as outstanding overall and for well-led. Our children’s community services and women’s services are CQC rated as good. With over 3200 staff and a turnover in excess of £300m, we have a hugely exciting and diverse strategic agenda across local and regional geographies, including multiple external partnerships and ambitious clinical-academic development plans, including the integration of children’s cardio-respiratory services across Evelina London and Royal Brompton Hospital and a major capital development programme.

The Chief of Staff is a new role to support the Evelina London Director across the full breadth of her portfolio, which includes responsibilities as accountable officer for the Trust’s services for women and children, SRO for the Evelina Expansion Programme, chair and member of a wide range of external partnerships, and membership of Guy’s & St Thomas’ senior executive leadership team. The Chief of Staff is a member of the Evelina London Executive Committee, manages a number of small teams, and has particular responsibility for the Director’s central office, managing cross-organisational interdependencies, and corporate governance. The postholder will ensure that the Director has access to information and high quality briefing to support appropriately informed decision-making, that the Director’s time is optimally used to deliver the Clinical Group’s plans and priorities, and that the functioning of the Director’s office is efficient and effective. They will ensure that the Clinical Group’s plans and programmes of activity are appropriately connected and integrated to manage interdependencies and avoid the risk of duplication or silo-working, and personally lead on a range of highly sensitive and strategically important initiatives. They will lead the design and effective operation of all aspects of Clinical Group corporate governance, including policy development. They will lead on effective communication within and beyond the Clinical Group.

We are seeking an individual with a significant and proven track record of delivering effective corporate services in a large, multifaceted environment including staff management, financial management and change management. You will have an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the changing NHS environment and the challenges it faces, and extensive experience of NHS regulatory processes, governance and strategic programme reporting. You will be highly motivated, resilient and have the exceptional interpersonal, communication and presentation skills required to work successfully with a multitude of internal and external stakeholders. You will be able to demonstrate sophisticated political judgement and combine the ability to maintain a wide-ranging view across the Clinical Group’s activities and priorities, anticipating and pre-empting the need for action, with a firm grip on detail and completely reliable management of robust systems and processes. Operating quietly and effectively, often behind the scenes, your success will be the success of the Clinical Group.

To arrange an informal discussion with Marian Ridley, the Director, please contact Sally Storey at sally.storey@gstt.nhs.uk. The closing date for applications is 8th June at midnight. Interviews will take place at Evelina London on the 21st June, with stakeholder sessions to be held prior to the interview.
