Band 5 Registered Nurse /Teaching Assistant
37.5hrs week term time only.

Whether you are currently working in an educational setting or keen to explore a new career path, this is an exciting opportunity to support a student with complex health needs by enabling them to access secondary education.

Hours: Monday – Friday,8.15am – 4.15pm (Term time only)

Location: Abbey School, Farnham Surrey (for children aged between 11-16 years who have learning difficulties and additional needs)

The student you will be supporting has complex health needs with some learning/social difficulties and is fully ventilated via a tracheostomy. The student is able to walk independently for short distances; however, for long distances, uses an electric wheelchair independently. The student is nil by mouth and is fed via a PEG. The student is generally happy and independent in the classroom environment with some supervision throughout the school day to maintain stability and safety regarding health and social needs. As part of your role you will be responsible for escorting the student to and from school via their arranged transport. . If you are interested in joining our dedicated and highly motivated team of Special School Nurses/Assistant Practitioners who work across Surrey within this service we would be very happy to hear from you!

Clinical needs include:

  • Oxygen saturation monitoring

  • Suction to tracheostomy

  • Administration of nebuliser

  • Changing of O2 cylinders (maintaining daily inventory of oxygen cylinders)

  • Setting up/taking down PEG feed

  • Occasional administration of medication via PEG

  • Occasional re-cannulation of tracheostomy

  • Monitoring ventilation via an astral 150 ventilator

Social needs include:

  • Some occasional assistance with toileting (mostly independent) and handwashing/personal hygiene

  • Supervision and monitoring of age-appropriate play/interaction with friends

  • Encouragement to negotiate regarding games/activities when playing with friends

  • Encouragement to pace all activities in order to preserve stamina/avoid tachycardia


  • Full training is provided by our nursing team - our specially designed training room has all the equipment needed to teach our staff how to care for the student, including ventilators, suction machine and mannequins to enable demonstration and practical skills training in tracheostomy care.

  • The induction training period includes Clinical Skills training and shadowing.

  • You will undergo all necessary training required by the school
