At West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (WMAHSN) our mission is to seek out, test and accelerate the adoption and spread of innovative ideas and technologies with the potential to transform health and social care in the West Midlands and beyond.

We are integral to the NHS’s innovative responses to the ongoing Covid pandemic and are now making significant changes to ensure that recent momentum is harnessed to deliver an even more impactful future.

As part of these changes we have created this exciting new role responsible for ensuring that priority innovations primarily commissioned by the NHS are successfully implemented and available to patients across the West Midlands region at pace and scale.

You will already have a proven track record of successfully initiating and delivering impactful programmes of transformation and change in the most demanding of health and social care environments.

As a highly motivated, driven, programme leader and collaborative team player you’ll be actively seeking an opportunity to share your skills, extend the scope and grow the scale your influence, to make an even greater difference to the lives of patients, the public and clinicians beyond a current one or a group of organisations, or from one discipline, to extend across the West Midlands region.

This new opportunity will give you responsibility for ensuring that our NHS commissioned programmes of transformational change are led so successfully throughout their full lifecycle that we can confidently stake our reputation on them. The scope of programme responsibility is extensive and dynamic. It currently includes: mental health, CVD, medicines optimisation, and workforce.

Upon appointment you will lead a team responsible for the development, delivery and implementation of this extensive range of programmes. It’s a pivotal role that acknowledges our impact and success is only as good as our delivery.

Whilst reporting to the Operations Director, you will also be a key member of the Operational Leadership Team who will significantly influence organisational strategy, lead on operational planning and are responsible for every aspect of the day-to-day leadership and operation of the organisation

Whilst the successful candidate will already have an excellent track record of programme leadership and delivery, this role provides a fantastic opportunity for many candidates to extend their scope of responsibilities, and the scale of impact to multiple programmes across a regional footprint, with some contribution at a national level.

It will also enable the further development of leadership, operational and general management skills within the Operational Leadership Team and with the mentoring support of the Operations Director and Executive Leadership Team.

The WMAHSN is one of fifteen regional networks that work in partnership with NHS trusts, industry, social care, third sector and universities. We are primarily funded by NHS England, NHS Improvement and the Office of Life Sciences, and focus on the spread of innovations at scale and pace, ensuring that new healthcare and life sciences tools are available wherever they can make a difference by saving time, money and lives, and bringing the West Midlands the future of health and social care, today.

In practice this includes:

  • Increasing capacity and capability in the region to adopt innovation
  • Providing an innovation and adoption process that matches viable solutions to defined challenges
  • Establishing focused collaborative partnerships that implement identified solutions to achieve measurable impact
  • Driving adoption through improved understanding between industry, academia, health and the patient and citizens
  • Creating the necessary environment and conditions for sustainable economic growth for the health economy

The role is formally based in Birmingham at the Institute of Translational Medicine,Heritage Building at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, with considerable scope to work remotely.

There will be professionally interesting and challenging opportunities to engage with a wide variety of stakeholder organisations across the West Midlands region and also occasions for national and international collaboration.
