The Estates Directorate is seeking to recruit a highly motivated Specialist Engineering Manager (mechanical) or suitably qualified Mechanical Engineer who is looking to initially develop within the Assistant Engineering Estates Officers role. Based at the Freeman Hospital, the suitable candidate will form part of the established Mechanical Engineers Team who collectively co-ordinate, design and manage mechanical engineering maintenance works within one of the busiest, largest and most successful teaching Foundation Trusts within the country.

Supported and mentored by Chartered Engineers and developed through a detailed role specific training program, your primary objective will be to co-ordinate, manage, motivate and lead in-house labour and specialist contractors with the ultimate aim of maintaining high engineering maintenance standards and excellent estates service provision.

An understanding and appreciation of engineering maintenance activities is essential, with ideal candidates able to demonstrate experience obtained within a building services engineering maintenance environment. Irrelevant of experience, the successful applicant will be required to demonstrate exceptional organisation skills, have a strong work ethic and able to communicate effectively to technical and non-technical staff at all levels within the organisation.

If successful, the role will result in the responsibility to ensure the successful day to day management of the one or more of the following mechanical systems on site: high and low temperature hot water systems, ventilation systems, steam systems, medical gas systems, natural gas systems, domestic hot & cold water systems and decontamination equipment. Prior experience is desirable although support will be provided where necessary. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a detailed understanding of some if not all of the following: HTM’s, CIBSE guides, British Standards and Building Regulations and able to manage mechanical engineering maintenance works, major repairs, plant replacement and undertake major revenue works projects from inception to completion.

To be appointed to the Specialist Engineering Manager (Band 7) role you will be required to be educated to degree level (or equivalent experience) and able to demonstrate substantial experience in an engineering related subject comparable to those presented within a hospital environment. However, the Department is keen to identify long term perspective members within the team and is therefore willing to consider Engineers who may be working towards the obtaining the relevant qualifications/experience and as such is willing to develop within the Assistant Engineering Estates Officers (Band 6) role before potentially progressing to the Specialist Engineering Manager role when eligible to apply for that role.

You will be asked to participate in a 24 hour on call rota system for all out of hours engineering related emergencies once established in the role and developed site knowledge.
