Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust was rated good by the Care Quality Commission in its recent inspection report published in January 2020.

The Trust is committed to driving excellence in care for patients and communities, through its five-year strategy ‘Working Together’. In support of its strategy, in July 2020, the Trust became a university hospital, and will work to drive benefits for patients, colleagues and the local community by embedding research, education and training across the organisation.

The Trust’s main hub is the Queen Alexandra Hospital, which started life more than a century ago as a military hospital. Today it is one of the largest, modern hospitals on the south coast, with 1,200 beds housed in light, bright, infection resistant, en-suite wards. With a turnover of close to £600m, the Trust provides comprehensive secondary care and specialist services to a local population of 675,000 people across South East Hampshire. Some tertiary services are provided to a wider catchment in excess of two million people. The Trust employs over 7,300 staff and is the largest employer in Portsmouth.

We welcome and encourage applications from individuals from diverse backgrounds. We recognise the value that a diverse workforce has in initiating fresh ideas and the contribution to delivering excellence for our patients, their families and carers.

The radiotherapy team at Portsmouth are motivated, enthusiastic and forward thinking in their approach to improving the quality of treatments for patients through innovation and research. We actively participate in clinical trials and use these to bring advanced techniques into routine clinical use.

We have just completed an equipment replacement programme for all 4 of our linacs, moving from Varian iX to Varian TrueBeams. In addition to standard functionality, these linacs also have 6 DoF couches, visual couching devices and iCBCT functionality.

We are also replacing our HDR brachytherapy system in March 2021 and our wide bore CT scanner is being replaced in 2021/22.

In addition to this equipment we also have an orthovoltage machine and we currently use Prosoma as our virtual simulation software. We use Pinnacle as our treatment planning system.

ARIA V15.5 patient management system links all aspects of the patient pathway together. We are also working towards a paper light environment.
