In the 2020 Shanghai International ranking, the Medical School in Leicester was ranked 20 (of 3,000 medical schools); Leicester was 5th in the UK (Highest rank for clinical medicine outside of the Golden Triangle). In April 2017 NIHR Biomedical Research Centre commenced, a collaboration between University of Leicester, University of Loughborough and University Hospitals of Leicester. The BRC brings together the work of Respiratory Medicine, Cardiovascular Science, Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity.


We will be running our first ever Volunteer Recruitment Day on Wednesday 12th May – the benefit of having recruitment day is so that we can fast track you through the system and get you out volunteering sooner rather than later. 

To accommodate everyone we are running 2 sessions during the day – 1pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm.  We will also have some of our volunteers at the event who will be able to answer any questions you have an give you an insight into the world of Volunteering at NGH.

We currently have the following volunteering roles available to choose from;

  • Response
  • Clinical
  • Administration

Response Volunteer Role

  • Transport patients in a wheelchair between wards
  • Assist with patient feeding
  • Collect medication from the onsite pharmacy and deliver to a ward
  • Provide basic administrative support
  • Transporting samples to labs
  • Sit and talk with patients
  • Assist with changing beds
  • Assisting on patient video calls
  • Accepting and delivering patient property

Full training will be provided for all of the above roles. So if you are looking to expand your skill base, gain valuable experience for your CV, or enjoy helping out in a varied role, then this is the opportunity for you.

Clinical Volunteer Role

We are looking for caring individuals who can assist on hospital wards. As a clinical volunteer, you will be assisting with;

  • Spending time with patients, providing a listening ear during their stay, providing a warm and relaxing environment,
  • Helping to serve meals and drinks
  • Accompanying and assisting escorting patients
  • Assisting with ward duties such as admin tasks, replenishment of gel dispensers, etc.
  • Assisting nursing staff in changing beds
  • Collecting patient medication from pharmacy
