Department:

Location:

Salary:

Northampton General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital have embarked on an exciting journey to become a University Hospitals Group, serving the whole of Northamptonshire and beyond through closer alignment and partnership with University of Leicester, University of Northampton and all other University partners. University of Leicester, with Northampton and Kettering Group, is committed to enhancing the partnership between academia and the NHS in Northamptonshire. A strong synergy between organisations is the key to success, major contributions made by consultant colleagues to the academic mission through research, teaching, education, clinical leadership, enterprise and innovation recognised by the award of a range of honorary titles from Honorary Fellow to Honorary Professor.

With four teaching schools (Allied Health Professions, Biological Sciences, Leicester Medical School, Psychology), six research departments (Cardiovascular Sciences, Genetics and Genome Biology hosting the Leicester Cancer Research Centre, Health Sciences hosting the Leicester Diabetes Research Centre, Molecular and Cell Biology, Neuroscience Psychology and Behaviour, Respiratory Sciences), the College’s mission is to pursue the highest standards of research, education, training in biomedical and related subjects, to apply this knowledge and expertise to enhance the quality of life and economic prosperity of populations, locally and in the world. The high calibre of our academic endeavour is increasingly being recognised. In the 2020 Shanghai International ranking, the Medical School in Leicester was ranked 20 (of 3,000 medical schools); Leicester was 5th in the UK (Highest rank for clinical medicine outside of the Golden Triangle). In April 2017 NIHR Biomedical Research Centre commenced, a collaboration between University of Leicester, University of Loughborough and University Hospitals of Leicester. The BRC brings together the work of Respiratory Medicine, Cardiovascular Science, Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity.

You will join the team of urology based at Northampton General Hospital delivering high quality elective and emergency urological services.

The post is partially funded by the cancer alliance and therefore will involve research and projects with some of the urological cancers. The remaining time is to assist the department in the delivery of elective and non-elective urology including outpatient clinics, diagnostics and core urology procedures.

The post would suit a urologist who is looking for ST3 equivalent experience in preparation for national selection to a training programme or who wishes to develop their career for a longer period of time especially in advancing their academic profile. The candidate should have an appropriate level of experience in outpatient clinics, diagnostic procedures (including flexible cystoscopy and trans-rectal ultrasound scan and prostate biopsy) along with experience in core urology procedures including inguino-scrotal surgery and circumcision.

Some experience in upper tract ureteroscopy for stones, transurethral resection of bladder tumours and TURP would be useful but not essential.

The department has recently enhanced its services for emergency urological admissions with the development of a 1 in 6 non-resident middle grade urology on-call rota.
