The BRC brings together the work of Respiratory Medicine, Cardiovascular Science, Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity.


Consultant Breast Radiologist/Director of Breast Screening – Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust

There is an exciting opening to join the Breast Screening Unit (BSU) as a Consultant Breast Radiologist and for the right candidate the opportunity to also be appointed as Director of Breast Screening.

We are a progressive, forward thinking department with a strong multi-disciplinary team. The role therefore requires the successful candidate to be a positive leader with exceptional communication, change management and people skills.

The successful candidate will in the main work clinically within the Breast Service and will be supported with the Director of Screening position (if applicable) by the Programme Manager, Consultant Radiographer and Office Manager.

This is therefore an excellent opportunity to continue your clinical work whilst leading and shaping the future direction of the Breast Screening service within Northampton.

Given the recent formation of a Hospital Group with Kettering General Hospital, this position offers the successful applicant the opportunity to lead the well-established service at an exciting time that will determine the future direction of the BSU and its team.

The breast service offers symptomatic patients an integrated one-stop service alongside a widely respected screening and accredited family history service.

The BSU has installed new digital mammography units (2 static and 2 mobile units), including tomosynthesis, 3D biopsy and contract enhanced spectral mammography capability. There is the opportunity as the Director of Screening to enhance the diagnostic services provided, utilising the high specification equipment to achieve its full potential.

The surgical team offer onsite onocplastic and reconstructive surgery and has commenced working collaboratively with Kettering General Hospital (the other Hospital Trust Group acute provider). We have recently completed a Magseed trial and expect this to be the gold standard for localisations.

Northampton General Hospital is a large DGH with over 700 beds. Along with a busy Emergency Department we have all medical and surgical specialities as well as women’s and a paediatric service. NGH is also a centre for oncology including radiotherapy; stroke including hyper-acute stroke, nephrology, cardiology and vascular surgery for the county of Northamptonshire and surrounding areas.

The Radiology Department has state of the art equipment on site. These include 3 new 128 slice CT scanners, 2 MRI scanners with a dedicated breast coil, theatre specification intervention radiology suite with day bed area, nuclear medicine unit with a fixed site, PET-CT scanner.

We encourage role expansion throughout the Radiology Department and Breast Service, so in addition to Consultant colleagues, you will be supported by a dedicated team of reporting and interventional radiographers/Advanced Practitioners.

Northamptonshire offers a high standard of living with beautiful villages and surrounding countryside and easy access to Birmingham, Oxford, Cambridge, London and Leicester. There are excellent opportunities for private practice within the region. The county is renowned for a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities including the arts, theatre, parks, rugby, golf, football, sailing and an international motor-racing circuit.

On site, we have excellent recreational facilities in the hospital including a gym and swimming pool.
