Deputy Medical Director – Safety and Professional Standards

** The management component of the role will be subject to agreement as part of the recruitment process but will have supplementary clinical PAs allocated to ensure at least a full time (i.e 10PA) allocation.**

As there is an expectation of work being undertaken across both locations (NDHT and RD&E), the advertisement for this role will appear on each Trusts’ NHS Jobs page, however it should be noted that there is one role and not two.

Accountable to the Chief Medical Officer, the Deputy Medical Director – Safety and Professional Standards (DMD) will provide extensive support and leadership with a particular focus on the Safety and Professional Standards aspects of the CMO portfolio and will also fulfil the statutory role of Responsible Officer for Medical Revalidation. The DMD will work across both the RD&E and NDHT and will report directly to the CMO but will work closely with the Medical Directors - Operations in each site.

On behalf of the CMO, and working closely with the HR departments, the DMD is responsible for ensuring robust and effective arrangements are in place to support medical appraisal and revalidation, to uphold professional standards and to ensure effective arrangements are in place for the management of practitioner concerns.

The DMD will also provide senior medical oversight in relation to doctors and dentists in training and undergraduate teaching, ensuring relevant internal and external requirements and obligations are met.

The DMD will provide senior medical oversight and input to a range of Trust committees and groups, focussed on Safety and Workforce governance and will also attend relevant Quality and Effectiveness groups pertinent to the overarching Safety and Professional Standards agenda.

As the Responsible Officer, the DMD holds professional accountability for all doctors and dentists employed by the Trusts.

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate with current GMC registration who has experience of undertaking the Responsible Officer role. Breadth of experience of working at senior management level of large/complex organisations is vital, as is evidence of collaborative working with partner organisations resulting in successful innovation and change. Able to articulate and demonstrate leadership that enables diversity in all its forms to thrive is essential.
