Due to new investment, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Clinical Pharmacist to join the Newcastle Hospitals’ (post-registration) Foundation Pharmacist Programme, based in this energetic and beautiful city. We welcome applications from both pre-registration pharmacist trainees (looking to qualify this summer) and qualified pharmacists with relevant experience.

The Newcastle Hospitals is a large tertiary teaching trust, twice rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. The Directorate of Pharmacy provides a broad service across an extensive range of clinical specialities. Our pharmacists integrate into a variety of settings including inpatient care, outpatient clinics, medicines information, GP practices, care homes, quality assurance and a licensed production unit. The department continues to innovate and is currently developing pioneering roles to optimise medicines use and promote safe effective patient care. Our close partnership with the Northern Deanery and Newcastle’s School of Pharmacy furthers our research and development, and provides opportunities to gain experience in teaching and quality improvement activities.

Successful applicants will be team-players with excellent communication and inter-personal skills, and a keen willingness to learn and enhance their professional development. They will be given a superb opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of clinical settings and specialities (including mental health, cardiothoracics, vascular surgery, oncology, paediatrics, general medicine, general surgery, emergency admissions, critical care, haematology, neurosciences, integrated care and older people’s medicine), as well as working within the directorate’s medicines information department.

The Newcastle Hospitals' Foundation Pharmacist Programme is built on the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Foundation Framework. Each clinically-focused placement is accompanied by structured learning and is supported by a specialist clinical pharmacist practice supervisor, ensuring that our pharmacists are given the best opportunities to develop a solid foundation of clinical knowledge and skills as they progress through their training. Further development opportunities are provided by participation in our highly-valued extended-hours and on-call service, which allows us to deliver more comprehensive patient-facing care. Pharmacists completing our foundation training will undoubtedly be in a very strong position for future career opportunities with skills that reflect the needs of the future pharmacy workforce.
