The Trust’s main hub is the Queen Alexandra Hospital, which started life more than a century ago as a military hospital. Today it is one of the largest, modern hospitals on the south coast, with 1,200 beds housed in light, bright, infection resistant, en-suite wards. With a turnover of close to £600m, the Trust provides comprehensive secondary care and specialist services to a local population of 675,000 people across South East Hampshire. Some tertiary services are provided to a wider catchment in excess of two million people. The Trust employs over 7,300 staff and is the largest employer in Portsmouth.

Theatre Practitioner

Queen Alexandra Hospital has a reputation as a dynamic and inovative place to work. It’s Theatres are leading the way in Robotic Surgery and is recognised as a Worldwide Centre of Excellence.

There are 27 modern, state-of- the- art theatres across 2 floors which undertake elective, emergency and trauma work for both Adults and Paediatrics.

The Main Recovery Department is situated on E level and consists of a 6 bedded Paediatric area, 2 Bariatric bays and 20 bays on the open floor. There is also an additional 7 bays located within the Day Surgery Unit on D level. Staff are expected to upskill and rotate between both areas. In addition to this, Recovery staff provide support to Maternity, Interventional Radiology, MRI & Gastro remote services. The Service provides 24/7 cover with a variety of shift patterns.

What you can expect from us

We aim to develop staff once established in their clinical area, to provide rotational positions in 2 areas of Operating Department Practice of their choice (Recovery, Scrub and Anaesthetics) enhancing the multi-disciplinary team.

We have a number of dedicated Educational/Training mornings identified throughout the year and an excellent IT facility to support with on-line training.

You will be supported by an enthusiastic team of staff to help you develop skills in the more complex major cases. A competency based package of training complete with buddies/mentors is provided to achieve this.

Via the appraisal process we identify and offer the opportunity to advance in different specialties by encouraging rotation and developing new skills. We encourage our staff to undertake Leadership and Management courses and empower them to Lead the workforce.

To support you, we have a dedicated team of Educational Practitioners who are focused on delivering a meaningful and achievable Educational programme.

Key duties:

  • You will be expected to rotate across both levels of Recovery and to support all remote areas

  • You will need to be open and adaptable to learning new skills and developing your Leadership skills further.

  • You should be either a Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner who is flexible in your working approach with the ability to demonstrate forward thinking and problem solving.

  • Weekend working is compulsory and there may be a requirement for rotational night duty
