Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine

Applications are invited for a locum consultant post in Emergency Medicine at North Devon District Hospital. The opportunity is available pending substantive recruitment to expand the consultant body within the Emeregncy Department.

The post is full time, attracting 10 PAs. There is a 1:8 weekday and 1:10 weekend on-call rota affording an excellent work-life balance. The department sees approximately 50,000 new patients per year, of whom approximately 25% are children, with a further 20,000 seen in the affiliated Minor Injury Units. We have an annualised rota and encourage sub specialty interests among the team.

Our small, friendly department delivers a modern, comprehensive service and boasts a 4 bedded resuscitation room, 14 majors cubicles and dedicated paediatric facilities. New ideas are encouraged and championed, and our consultants are committed to continuous improvement through embracing change and innovation. The department is undergoing a phase of rebuilding and growth and the expectation that we will increase our Consultant numbers to ten in the coming year. We are supported in the department by outreach physiotherapy and frailty services and have an excellent working relationship with our specialist colleagues.

The hospital was the first in the South of England to be awarded Trauma Unit status, the network’s Major Trauma Centre is 90 minutes away. Our Emergency Department consultants lead all trauma calls 24/7 and provide thrombolysis for eligible stroke patients. We have an active role in TARN and are fully engaged with the Peninsular Trauma Network.

The successful applicants will take a full and active part in all aspects of patients’ medical care, providing both a consultant led and a consultant delivered service. This will include taking operational responsibility for the day-to-day running of the department, ensuring high quality clinical care is delivered and relevant clinical and performance standards are met. The successful applicants will be responsible for the direct clinical supervision of specialty and training grade doctors as well as extended role nurse practitioners.

We are a research active Trust and our department is actively working on a national research project in conjunction with SWEAT, the South West Emergency Academic Team. We provide excellent opportunities for training and development, and ALS, EPALS, ILS and ATLS courses are delivered on site. We are committed to providing a training pathway for SASG emergency doctors to gain CESR.

Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust provides a wide range of district general hospital and community health and social care services to 170,000 residents across North Devon and to the thousands who visit the region in the summer. We are a top-performing trust and have been top in the country against the four-hour target on more than one occasion. We were chosen as one of the HSJ’s best places to work, and have an enviable patient satisfaction record. We are enrolled in the HIP II project and foresee significant development inside the trust in the coming years.

North Devon is consistently voted one of the best places to live in England. It is recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty and extends from the edge of Exmoor in the east, to Lundy Island off the coast in the west, to the Taw Valley in the south, providing contrasts of moorland, downs, valleys, rugged cliffs and world-famous surfing beaches. The area has excellent local schools and has strong links with the world-class universities of Exeter and Plymouth.

Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council with licence to practice.

For an informal discussion, prospective candidates are welcome to contact Dr. Oliver Dodd (Lead Clinician) on 01271 314044. Informal visits are welcomed and transport and accommodation costs will be covered.

We are committed to equal opportunities and seek to recruit the best people to our workforce to ensure the provision of high quality and professional standards of care. We actively encourage applications from all sectors of the community, regardless of gender, age, racial origin, religion, belief, disability or sexual orientation.

All disabled applicants meeting the essential criteria of a post will be offered an interview. Should you, as a result of a disability, require reasonable adjustments to be made as part of the recruitment process (e.g. venue access, information format, interpreter etc.), please do not hesitate to make a member of the recruitment team aware.

We offer flexible working arrangements, career opportunities and encourage work-life balance.

We thank you for your interest in us and look forward to receiving your application.

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

According to many clinical targets, we rate as one of the best performing non-foundation trusts in England, because we treat patients in line with national waiting time standards, have very few hospital-acquired infections and meet our four-hour waiting times for urgent care. We have a huge range of clinical expertise that we share across professional spheres to ensure people get world-class care when they need it.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
