The BRC brings together the work of Respiratory Medicine, Cardiovascular Science, Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity.

CONSULTANT ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON – Facial Deformity, skin cancer and general OMFS

NGH NHS Trust is looking to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with a special interest in facial deformity, TMJ surgery and skin surgery. This is a replacement full time post (at least 10PAs) based at Northampton General Hospital (NGH) and Kettering General hospital. (KGH)

The successful candidate will join a team of 4 other consultant maxillofacial surgeons, In addition there are 2 Specialist Trainees in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery from the Oxford and East of England deaneries and 8 DCT trainees


NGH also has 3 speciality doctors in OMFS. In addition there is a visiting restorative dental consultant from Leicester, a trust grade restorative dentist and a dental hygienist. There are plans to expand the restorative service for complex patients.

There is a maxillofacial laboratory at NGH providing services for the maxillofacial and orthodontic teams. The maxillofacial technologists also provide a medical photography service within the department.

The maxillofacial department at NGH has been recently refurbished and now has 6 new modern surgeries and a new cone beam CT scanner. All aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery are performed except cleft lip and palate and craniofacial surgery. All in-patient surgery and head and neck trauma are managed at NGH. Inpatients are managed on a dedicated head and neck ward which includes a treatment room. Surgical facilities include operating theatres for inpatients and a day surgery unit with 3 operating theatres.

There is a monthly joint orthognathic clinic between the facial deformity consultants and the orthodontic consultants in Kettering . There is a head and neck cancer MDT at NGH every Friday afternoon with video links to KGH and Milton Keynes. There is a local skin cancer MDT every Thursday at noon and a specialist skin cancer MDT (SSMDT) video linked with KGH and Leicester on Thursday morning. There is also a monthly joint skin specialist clinic between the dermatologists, maxillofacial and plastic surgeons. We also have excellent working relations with our oculoplastic and ENT surgeons and perform cases jointly.

There is administrative support including secretarial support at both sites. You will have office space at NGH.


KGH has2 consultant orthodontists with a specialist orthodontic trainee from the London deaneries. There are plans to integrate the 2 orthodontic departments in the future. There are also 3 speciality doctors in OMFS.

There is a maxillofacial laboratory at KGH providing services for the maxillofacial and orthodontic teams.

KGH has a new modern maxillofacial unit with a cone beam CT scanner and an operating suite within the department. KGH provides facilities for outpatient clinics as well as day surgery There is a weekly skin cancer MDT on Wednesday midday with links to the SSMDT on Thursday mornings. There is a joint orthognathic clinic monthly between the facial deformity consultants and the consultants.

The new consultant will be expected to undertake facial deformity surgery for patients from across the county. You will attend joint clinics with the current consultants. The 2 departments also have a large skin cancer load treating over 600 cases per annum. You will be expected to participate in the management of skin cancer patients at and attend the skin cancer MDT. You will also be expected to perform general maxillofacial surgery including dento-alveolar surgery and head and neck trauma. There is scope to develop a TMJ service and a minimally invasive salivary gland service.

There are monthly consultant led teaching days at NGH. All junior staff are encouraged to attend. In addition there is a monthly departmental meeting and a monthly morbidity, mortality and governance meeting. You are expected to attend these. . The department is very active in audit and research with several publications in peer review journals as well as presentations at national and international meetings. You will be encouraged to participate in these activities if you are interested.

There will be a 1:5 on call consultant rota with a full middle grade tier of cover and a full tier of DF trainees 1st on call . The successful candidate will also be encouraged and supported to develop any other interests

The trust currently offer 1.5 SPAs automatically with scope to expand to 2SPAs with trust approved activities.
