The BRC brings together the work of Respiratory Medicine, Cardiovascular Science, Diet, Lifestyle and Physical Activity.


Consultant Midwife Lead High Risk – Band 8b

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual who aspires to take on a strategic midwifery role in practice leadership. The post holder will work with the Deputy Director of Midwifery, Midwifery Management Team, midwives, and obstetricians. The role includes facilitating midwives’ autonomy, incorporating evidence based practice at all stages of the woman’s pathway, with the emphasis on when the pregnancy is complex socially, psychologically or physically. The main purpose of this role is to develop, lead and support the High Risk Pathways within the service. The post holder will provide professional leadership on the Delivery Suite to support clinical practice with the Multi-Disciplinary Team. They will work closely with clinical staff across the Maternity Service to deliver high quality safe care for women and their babies.

The post holder will be part of the Senior Midwifery Team on call rota to deliver continuing support to clinical staff 24 hours a day seven days a week, ensuring safe high quality care for women and their babies.

Our Maternity services include:

  • A modern alongside three-bed Birth Centre with birthing pools and 8 postnatal beds
  • 8 bed consultant-led Labour Ward with a birthing pool.
  • A dedicated Obstetric theatre with recovery
  • 18 bed Maternity higher Observation Ward
  • A Bereavement Suite with garden
  • A Maternity Day Unit and Outpatient Clinic and Midwifery Led Sonography services
  • 23 bedded ward for inpatient antenatal and postnatal mothers and babies
  • A dedicated and award winning dedicated Home Birth Team
  • Six bedded Transitional Care Ward launched August 2019 to facilitate care of babies requiring Transitional care.
  • Currently there are 4 Continuity of Carer Teams in line with Better Births 5 year Plan, with ongoing development of further teams in early 2021

With a current delivery rate of 4600 births and ambitious plans across the Local Maternity System for transforming maternity services to be aligned with the Better Births recommendations, this is an exciting time and a great opportunity for you to join our forward thinking, innovative and award winning maternity team at Northampton.

Shortlisted for Enhancing patient care Nursing Times Awards and the RCM Awards 2017 for Excellence in Maternity Care. Finalists in two categories for the 2017 PENNA for Personalisation of care and Continuity of carer.
  • We are passionate AND innovative in our approach in designing support and wellbeing for staff; winning the Iolanthe Midwifery Award in 2018 and having a senior full time lead for A-EQUIP.
  • Proactive in developing the workforce for the future, this year saw the first ever Florence Nightingale Midwifery Scholar.
  • We deliver some of the most highly rated maternity care experience in the UK: the CQC Maternity Experience survey showed that Northampton was performing better than most UK hospitals and in five survey questions was rated the best in the UK.
  • We have Full BFI accreditation. We are currently working towards a Gold Standard.
