Isles Of Scilly- Coxswain (On Call)

Job Reference: 202-A-21-14084

Employer:
South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust
Location:
St Marys, Isles of Scilly
Salary:
£14.91 - £18.32 per hour

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) is seeking compassionate, caring and committed individuals to provide support to our dedicated team of clinicians on the Isles of Scilly. We have exciting opportunities to work as a bank Coxswain on the Star of Life Ambulance boat. The role includes day to day checking and recording of the vessel condition. A key element of the role is the operation of the vessel in line with local and Maritime regulations in support of the clinicians attending the off islands of the Isles of Scilly (IOS) in response to urgent and emergency calls.

As a bank role the opportunity is to provide cover to planned or short notice absences of the current coxswains. When called upon to work you will need to be available to operate at any time throughout the 24hr period for the duration of your tour of duty. This is remunerated by the hour during the daytime period (hours following the existing rota) and by an on-call basis overnight for both weekdays and weekends.

You will need to have the necessary level of qualification associated with the category of the vessel which currently includes RYA/DFT Certificate of Competency Service – Coastal Skipper or the RYA/DFT Advanced Power Boat with commercial endorsement; with 2 years’ experience operating high speed commercial vessels of this size. In addition applicants should hold all elements of the STCW, a VHF DCS Short Range Certificate, an ENG1 medical certificate, and a valid IOS boatsmen license. Please see the full person specification for other essential and desirable elements. There is also a requirement to hold a full, clean driving licence in the event that you are required to support operation of the ambulances on St Marys; preferably with the C1 category.

It is critical that applicants should be enthusiastic, trustworthy, reliable, self-disciplined and flexible and be able to maintain absolute confidentiality; working in line with the Trusts code of conduct and policies.

Time commitment:

The role is partly on-call and you will be expected to immediately mobilise to incidents once allocated by the clinical hub without delay, therefore provision will need to be in place for any other responsibilities that you may have during your tour of duty.

The nature of role means that we are unable to give absolute assurance that you will finish at your planned time and therefore any provision should be flexible to suit the needs of the service.

Please note as part of the assessment process your name and email address will be passed onto an external company (Driver Metrics’) to conduct a driving situational judgement test (SJT). Please see applicant guidance for more details regarding this assessment.
