Consultants in Intensive Care Medicine

Applications are invited for two Consultant posts in Intensive Care Medicine at North Devon District Hospital. Candidates working solely in ICM only or with a specialty other than Anaesthesia are also encouraged to apply. These posts are offered on a whole-time basis (10.0PA) but suitably-qualified applicants unable to work full-time will be considered.

The 8 bed Critical Care unit is part of the South West Critical Care network and is anticipated to expand in coming years with HIP2 funding available to significantly upgrade the infrastructure. The unit supports ED, surgery, medicine, maternity and paediatrics with transfers to tertiary facilities where appropriate. Job plans include time for anaesthesia but for applicants from other specialties sessional time will be negotiated accordingly.

The successful applicants will join an integrated and expanding department of Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain, currently consisting of 21 consultants, 13 SAS anaesthetists, 11 Core Anaesthesia / ACCS trainees and an administrative team.

The successful applicants can expect to be quickly included in the active quality improvement and clinical governance programmes. Opportunities to develop areas of interest, such as education and imaging are encouraged, with potential for research, leadership and management roles and an SPA allocation to match. The acute hospital is big enough to provide clinical satisfaction, yet small enough to make prompt, effective changes.

NDHT is consistently ranked top in the South West for staff satisfaction and with the main hospital nestled between miles of golden beaches and Exmoor National Park, you’ll find our off-duty staff and their families enjoying Devon life, a county frequently voted as one of the best places to live. See ‘#loveNDHT’ on YouTube for more.

For further details, please contact our Critical Care Lead, Dr Gareth Moncaster, email: g.moncaster@nhs.net.

This post is being offered as Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust continue to develop our long standing partnership with a view to becoming a single integrated organisation across Eastern and Northern Devon. Working together gives us the opportunity to offer unique and varied careers across our services combining the RD&E’s track record of excellence in research, teaching and links to the university with NDHT’s innovation and adaptability.

Whilst the post holder is formally being appointed to a role within the base hospital of Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, over time there may be a need to provide some clinical activity in the partner hospital site to ensure service continuity and equity of access to appropriate services.

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

According to many clinical targets, we rate as one of the best performing non-foundation trusts in England, because we treat patients in line with national waiting time standards, have very few hospital-acquired infections and meet our four-hour waiting times for urgent care. We have a huge range of clinical expertise that we share across professional spheres to ensure people get world-class care when they need it.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
