Consultant General Anaesthetist

Applications are invited for 2 Consultant Anaesthetist posts at North Devon District Hospital. These are offered on a whole-time (10.0PA) but suitably-qualified applicants unable to work full-time will be considered.

We are increasing our Consultant body to reduce on-call frequency and meet the demand on elective work. All specialist interests relevant to our surgical specialties are encouraged and plans to significant upgrade our infrastructure using HIP2 funding will only increase further our ability to provide top level surgical outcomes.

Acute duties include adult and paediatric emergency and trauma Anaesthesia along with obstetrics, supported by an expanding cadre of SAS doctors. ICM has a separate rota and we provide mutual aid when needed.

The successful applicants will join an expanding team of 21 consultants, 13 SAS Anaesthetists, 11 Core / ACCS trainees and admin staff to provide comprehensive anaesthesia and critical care services for the population of North Devon.

Our clinicians maintain both specialist and generalist skills, balanced with an enviable outdoor lifestyle. The acute hospital is big enough to provide real opportunities for teaching, leadership, research and innovation, yet small enough to make prompt, effective changes, with an SPA allocation to match.

NDHT is consistently ranked top in the South West for staff satisfaction and with the main hospital nestled between miles of golden beaches and Exmoor National Park,
you’ll find our off-duty staff and their families enjoying Devonlife, a county frequently voted as one of the best places to live. See ‘#loveNDHT’ on YouTube for more.

For further details, contact Dr David Beard, Lead Clinician, email:david.beard1@nhs.net.

This post is being offered as Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust continue to develop our long standing partnership with a view to becoming a single integrated organisation across Eastern and Northern Devon. Working together gives us the opportunity to offer unique and varied careers across our services combining the RD&E’s track record of excellence in research, teaching and links to the university with NDHT’s innovation and adaptability.

Whilst the post holder is formally being appointed to a role within the base hospital of Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, over time there may be a need to provide some clinical activity in the partner hospital site to ensure service continuity and equity of access to appropriate services.

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

According to many clinical targets, we rate as one of the best performing non-foundation trusts in England, because we treat patients in line with national waiting time standards, have very few hospital-acquired infections and meet our four-hour waiting times for urgent care. We have a huge range of clinical expertise that we share across professional spheres to ensure people get world-class care when they need it.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
