Clinical Research Fellows

Grade: FY3+ Critical Care

Salary: MN39

Start date: August 2021

2 Posts available (please indicate which post/s you are applying for)

Critical Care:

  • Digital Healthcare – 1 post
  • Data Science – 1 post

This fellowship is suitable for clinicians who wish to combine a year of clinical work in critical care with a digital health / data science research post. The fellow will divide their week day time equally between clinical and research work, and cover clinical on-calls pro rata (i.e. 50%). This would ideally be suited to someone willing to job share (we have 2 posts).

The clinical post will be on a mixed medical/surgical unit; we look after the full range of critically ill patients in multi-organ failure, taking all general admissions from the ED & wards. We admit in excess of 2000 patients per year, and have been one of the major ‘surge’ centres during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The data science / digital healthcare component will involve one of the two following projects

    • Development of metrics to monitor patient safety on the general wards, working in close collaboration with Information Services analysts. Metrics would be based on NEWS2/the patient deterioration pathway. The outputs would be fed into the Deteriorating Patient Safety Group, the Exemplar Ward Programme and the Trust Quality Account. They would also help deliver the National Deteriorating Patient CQUIN that has recently been announced.
    • Implementation of a critical care haemato-oncology prospective audit and outcomes analysis: We are about to become one of the largest providers of critical care to haemato-oncology in the UK. We have problems with both the management of infection and high rates of acquired sepsis. We also struggle with the management of severe respiratory failure in this cohort. We strongly believe that building a prospective cohort would allow us to investigate these priority areas, and provide a foundation for quality improvement and research.

Closing date: 2 weeks
