Consultant General Radiologist

Applications are invited for a Consultant General Radiologist with a sub-specialty interest to join a friendly, cohesive radiology department in North Devon District Hospital, located in Barnstaple, which currently includes six full time consultants. Ideally, the applicant would have an interest in chest, paediatrics or neuroradiology but other interests would be considered and development of a subspecialty interest would be supported and encouraged. We currently work on a 1:6 on call rota, which would become 1:7 following a successful appointment. After 5pm, imaging is sent to an outsourcing company and then overnight to the Peninsula Registrar on call. This post is offered on a whole-time basis (10PA) but suitably-qualified applicants who are unable to work full-time will be considered.

The department provides high quality general and specialist services with excellent working relationships with the various medical and surgical teams across the hospital and with the GP body in the North Devon community. Given the size of the hospital and consultant body, there is a genuine “family feel” to our department and there are plenty of opportunities for self-development in areas such as in education via our links with the Peninsula Radiology Academy or in more specialist services via our collaborative agreement with the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust.

Work life balance is crucial and you will be joining a department that puts this philosophy front and centre. As part of the beautiful South West, North Devon offers a lifestyle package few other regions of the UK can; we are arguably one of the country’s best kept secrets. Rugged coastlines and endless sandy beaches offer a mixture of surfing, swimming, kayaking and sailing. Two championship golf courses, miles and miles of trails and the desolate majesty of Exmoor are a golfer’s, hiker’s, runner’s or biker’s paradise and if picture postcard villages are your thing, you will be amply catered for.

There is much more besides to North Devon but don’t take our word for it;

House prices are extremely affordable and reputable state and private schools are on the doorstep.

So plan your escape to the country and come and join us.

This post is being offered as Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust continue to develop our long standing partnership with a view to becoming a single integrated organisation across Eastern and Northern Devon. Working together gives us the opportunity to offer unique and varied careers across our services combining the RD&E’s track record of excellence in research, teaching and links to the university with NDHT’s innovation and adaptability.

Whilst the post holder is formally being appointed to a role within the base hospital of Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, over time there may be a need to provide some clinical activity in the partner hospital site to ensure service continuity and equity of access to appropriate services.

Our values guide everything we do. At all times, we aim to:

  • Demonstrate compassion
  • Strive for excellence
  • Respect diversity
  • Act with integrity
  • Listen and support others

Our teams of care professionals work with patients and their families to support peoples’ independence, health and wellbeing. We provide support to avoid hospital admissions, and if an admission is necessary, we try to make each patient’s stay in hospital as short and effective as possible before working with them on a safe discharge home.

According to many clinical targets, we rate as one of the best performing non-foundation trusts in England, because we treat patients in line with national waiting time standards, have very few hospital-acquired infections and meet our four-hour waiting times for urgent care. We have a huge range of clinical expertise that we share across professional spheres to ensure people get world-class care when they need it.

In our most recent staff survey, our staff voted us in the top 10% of NHS provider organisations to work for and we also came out as the top provider in the South West for our overall results. Our patients (through the Friends and Family Test) regularly report an average of over 95% satisfaction with our services.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. For further information and to self-assess the likelihood of obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship, please visit the UK Border Agency website. Note: we will be unable to obtain Tier 2 sponsorship for Bank positions.

Please note that we may close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applicants.
