The Clinical Biotechnology Centre (CBC), part of Cellular and Molecular Therapies (CMT) of NHSBT, is a specialist manufacturer of clinical-grade material for advanced therapies. CBC also has a product development department working with a number of external partners to translate R&D to the clinic. The CBC has started construction of a new state-of-the-art manufacturing centre in Filton (Bristol, UK). The post holder will initially join the viral vector development group in order to establish cGMP production of viral vectors for cell and gene therapy applications supporting early-stage clinical trials from the research and development stage into GMP-manufacturing in the new facility (based in Filton). The post holder will then move with the process into the new manufacturing facility. The new bespoke facility will be closely embedded with other departments in Cellular and Molecular Therapies and will profit from close collaboration taking therapies from the molecular to the cellular stage for clinical trials.

Molecular Therapy Scientist(Band 5) role involves:

  • Perform Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) production or testing and interpretation of novel recombinant proteins and Gene therapy clinical grade products manufactured at the Clinical Biotechnology Centre on behalf of NHSBT for clinical trials.
  • Contribute to the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) production service leading to release of reports or products.
  • Assist in training and supervision of support staff.

Molecular Therapy Specialist(Band 6) role involves:

  • Perform, analyse, and document complex laboratory investigations relating to the release of advanced medicinal therapy products such as gene therapy products, recombinant proteins and components and test results.
  • Undertake the production or testing of novel advanced medicinal therapy products to GMP.
  • Act as a mentor, supervisor and trainer for junior scientific and support staff.

Arrangements for Progressionto Band 6

On reaching the required level of specialist knowledge and experience and the second anniversary of your appointment to Band 5 you will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Evidence of your competence to work at the higher specialist level
  • Achievement of the necessary specialist knowledge

A Molecular Therapy Scientist wishing to develop skills will be considered for the post, paid as a Molecular Therapy Scientist on a Band 5 whilst achieving the necessary experience and qualifications. We have just one post to recruit to and our priority is to appoint a Molecular Therapy Specialist on Band 6.

You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours when required, with prior notice. You will also be required to provide cover in times of operational difficulty, with notice.

Production Department

To perform GMP production of novel viral vectors and gene therapy clinical grade products manufactured at the Clinical Biotechnology Centre on behalf of NHSBT for clinical trials. The post will involve working in a clean room using conventional biotechnology processes involving both upstream and downstream processing. Training will be provided for the successful candidate.
