Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the UK’s leading heart and lung hospital, treating around 50,000 patients each year. We are located in a new, purpose-built hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, with administrative services based in Huntingdon.

Since carrying out the UK’s first successful heart transplant in 1979, the hospital now performs more heart, heart-lung and lung transplants each year than any other UK centre.

In addition to transplantation, Royal Papworth Hospital has the UK’s largest Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre (RSSC) and is one of five UK centres providing Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) to patients experiencing severe respiratory failure. It is also the only centre in the UK for a number of specialist services including Pulmonary Endarterectomy and Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty (BPA).

Patient Advice and Liaison Service Supervisor

Full Time – 37.5 hours per week

Band 6 - £31,365 - £37,890

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and hardworking individual to lead and supervise the small but perfectly formed Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) team at Royal Papworth Hospital. In addition to the PALS Supervisor role, the team consists of a PALS Advisor and PALS Administrator and it is therefore essential that the post holder feels comfortable working within a small team who consistently achieve great things. We are looking for a candidate who is highly motivated and passionate about patient experience, has excellent written and verbal communication skills. Attention to detail and a sensitive and empathetic manner are key to this role. Resilience and tenacity are also important qualities to the role.

The post holder will work as part of the PALS team ensuring a speedy and informal resolution of problems and concerns raised by service users, their families and carers through liaison with Trust staff and other external agencies. This will require the post holder to provide high quality guidance and support to colleagues and all levels of clinical staff on resolving and responding to concerns and enquiries. They will be required to identify themes and trends arising from concerns and patient feedback and to ensure that lessons are being learned and evidence this through contributing to the Trust quality and risk reporting requirements.

The post holder will have day-to-day responsibility to oversee the activity of the department and the performance of the PALS staff, undertaking objective setting and individual performance reviews.

This is a varied role as the PALS team not only provide an accessible customer service for our patients their carers and families, they are also responsible for the recruitment and support of volunteers at the Trust. The PALS team are also responsible for the end to end Bereavement Administration and Follow up Service at the Trust, supporting families through the administration process when their loved one passes away at our hospital. This involves liaison with the medical staff and the Medical Examiner. Therefore, experience of the process for Medical Cause of Death Certification and the Coronial process would be an advantage but not essential.
