North Middlesex University Hospital is one of London’s busiest acute hospitals, serving more than 350,000 people living in Enfield and Haringey and the surrounding areas, including Barnet and Waltham Forest.

We are an integrated provider with a full range of adult, elderly and children's services across medical and surgical disciplines including community 0-19 yr old services in Enfield. Our specialist services include stroke, HIV/AIDS, cardiology, haematology, diabetes, fertility and orthopaedics. Our sickle cell and thalassaemia department is nationally recognised as a leading centre for these diseases. Every day, on average, we see 500 patients in A&E; 15 babies are born in our maternity unit; about 450 inpatients are cared for on our wards; about 50 patients have major or minor surgery in one of our 10 operating theatres; and about 800 people attend our outpatients clinics.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated paediatric doctor (ST3 and above) to join our team as a fellow in simulation and education in paediatrics. This post is ideal for a senior paediatric trainee looking to develop their portfolio in leadership, education and management skills that will be invaluable to you as a new consultant.

The post holder will work 60% of their contracted hours on a dedicated Paediatric ED middle grade rota and will gain experience and training in managing medically unwell children as well as injured children; the department is a busy Trauma Unit and part of the North East London Trauma Network. The successful candidate will be supported by a team of four Paediatric Emergency Medicine consultants and seventeen adult Emergency Medicine consultants, and will provide advice, teaching and supervision to more junior colleagues in the Paediatric Emergency Department.

The remaining 40% of contracted hours - or one day per week - will be protected non-clinical time for simulation and education related projects. The scope of these can be tailored to the interests of the successful candidate.

The paediatrics team at North Middlesex hospital has a well-established in-situ simulation programme from the inpatient unit. Our paediatric consultants in emergency medicine have doubled over the last two years and we have been eagerly increasing the simulation teaching in our ED, where we have an active team of facilitators. We would like an enthusiastic person with lots of initiative to help expand the provision of education in Paediatric ED and help develop more MDT learning opportunities with paediatrics and associated specialties.

The trust as a whole has been developing an overall trust vision for simulation and we have a lead practice educator who is developing our simulation faculty across the trust. We have a number of practice development nurses to support faculty in paediatrics and Paediatric ED. You would have the opportunity to work in an MDT with enthusiastic educators in adults ED, paediatric ED, paediatric inpatients and Anaesthetics to help broaden the opportunities and learning that is provided. You would be supported in gaining formal training for facilitating simulation and feedback training and going on to developing a portfolio for the London simulation faculty. You would be strongly supported in developing work to present at conferences and share through publications.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to attend weekly paediatric teaching and regional Paediatric Emergency Medicine training days, and will also be expected to contribute to the provision of teaching to members of the multidisciplinary team.


The paediatric department is committed to training and education, and is recognised as one of the best training sites in London, winning the PAFTA for best training centre in 2020. The paediatric emergency department has recently benefitted from a 1.4 million pound renovation. It is bright, spacious and welcoming, with custom designed artwork, and has a dedicated two-bed resuscitation area and four-bed high dependency area alongside a co-located paediatric Urgent Care.

The department has a strong drive towards Quality Improvement and successful applicants will be encouraged to shape the future of the department through guideline and pathway development and project work, with supported training for this. The department is a member site of PERUKI (Paediatric Emergency Research in UK and Ireland), participating in national and international research projects. There is a lot of activity within the sphere of child protection and a wealth of senior experience in this area to learn from; we benefit from extremely close links with our local safeguarding team. Applicants will be supported in developing an area of interest from these available opportunities.
