North Middlesex University Hospital is one of London’s busiest acute hospitals, serving more than 350,000 people living in Enfield and Haringey and the surrounding areas, including Barnet and Waltham Forest.

We are an integrated provider with a full range of adult, elderly and children's services across medical and surgical disciplines including community 0-19 yr old services in Enfield. Our specialist services include stroke, HIV/AIDS, cardiology, haematology, diabetes, fertility and orthopaedics. Our sickle cell and thalassaemia department is nationally recognised as a leading centre for these diseases. Every day, on average, we see 500 patients in A&E; 15 babies are born in our maternity unit; about 450 inpatients are cared for on our wards; about 50 patients have major or minor surgery in one of our 10 operating theatres; and about 800 people attend our outpatients clinics.

This post offers an exciting opportunity for individuals from a paediatric background (ST3 and above) to develop their Paediatric Emergency Medicine skills, experience and knowledge through working in our busy Paediatric Emergency Department, alongside performing a crucial and innovative community outreach and parent education role. This is the only post of its kind in the UK.

The post holder will work 60% of their contracted hours on a dedicated Paediatric ED Middle Grade rota and will gain experience and training in managing medically unwell children as well as injured children; the department is a busy Trauma Unit and part of the North East London Trauma Network. The successful applicant will be supported by a team of three Paediatric Emergency Medicine consultants and seventeen adult Emergency Medicine consultants, and will provide advice, teaching and supervision to more junior colleagues in the Paediatric Emergency Department.

The remaining 40% of contracted hours - or one day per week - will be protected non-clinical time for leading and developing our successful parent education community outreach scheme, ‘ABC Parents’. This scheme was begun as a result of a project run by a previous Darzi fellow, looking into innovative ways to reduce frequent attendances at ED.

ABC Parents has the full support of the PED consultant team and the nursing team, members of whom regularly volunteer to teach on the education days. The post holder will assume ‘lead doctor’ role for ABC Parents, with responsibilities including planning and running parent education sessions, running education sessions for local GPs, and evaluating the ongoing impact of the scheme.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to attend weekly paediatric teaching and regional Paediatric Emergency Medicine training days, and will also be expected to contribute to the provision of teaching to members of the multidisciplinary team.


The paediatric department is committed to training and education, and is recognised as one of the best training sites in London, winning the PAFTA for best training centre in 2020. The paediatric emergency department has recently benefitted from a 1.4 million pound renovation. It is bright, spacious and welcoming, with custom designed artwork, and has a dedicated two-bed resuscitation area and four-bed high dependency area alongside a co-located paediatric Urgent Care.

The trust runs major resuscitation courses (APLS/EPLS/NLS/ALS/TILS) and has a newly refurbished simulation suite with an active ED simulation faculty. The department has a strong drive towards Quality Improvement and successful applicants will be encouraged to shape the future of the department through guideline and pathway development and project work, with supported training for this.

The department is a member site of PERUKI (Paediatric Emergency Research in UK and Ireland), participating in national and international research projects. There is a lot of activity within the sphere of child protection and a wealth of senior experience in this area to learn from; we benefit from extremely close links with our local safeguarding team. Applicants will be supported in developing an area of interest from these available opportunities.
