Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which will commence in 2021

Consultant Gastroenterologist

We are looking to appoint a Consultant gastroenterologist to join six enthusiastic and motivated colleagues to progress the department further. This is a replacement post and is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week.

The Gastroenterology team is cohesive and provides a vast array of services, beyond what would be expected of a District General Hospital. The endoscopy unit is JAG accredited and, as expected, diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy, colonoscopy and ERCP services are well established. We have regular GA lists, Endoscopic ultrasound, 24 hour oesophageal pH & manometry and wireless capsule endoscopy. The most recent addition is a spyglass system and that service is at a very early stage

The consultant workforce are supported with a team of Specialist Nurses; 2WTE IBD nurses, 1.3 WTE liver nurses, 2 WTE upper GI/HPB cancer nurses and 1 WTE nutrition nurse. There are 4 Clinical Endoscopists one of whom is being upskilled to colonoscopy and is currently being trained on the HEE programme.

There is a rapidly expanding clinical research program with several ongoing academic and commercial studies supported by dedicated research nurses, pharmacists and research coordinators.

The main duties of the post will include the provision of upper and lower Gastrointestinal Endoscopies, participation in the GI bleed out of hours 1:6 on-call rota, hot week cover for in-patients 1:6 and Gastroenterology outpatient service.

There are no general medical on call commitments.

The successful candidate would be strongly encouraged and supported to develop a sub-speciality interest. If they wished to expand research / teaching activities then this would also be fully supported.

You must possess the following relevant experience and training to undertake this post:-

  • Basic Medical Degree
  • Full MRCP or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via one of the following
  1. a) Certificate of Completion of Training (Proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)

b)Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration

  • ALS (Adult Life Support) within last 3 years
