Given the nature of the work of PHE, as a Category 1 department, you may be required in an emergency, if deemed a necessity, to redeploy to another role at short notice. You may also be required to work at any other location, within reasonable travelling distance of your permanent home address, in line with the provisions set out in your contract of employment.


The Screening Quality Assurance Service (SQAS) is part of the Health Improvement directorate within Public Health England. It aims to provide a world class QA service for NHS screening programmes, providing consistent, high quality expert advice to providers and commissioners of screening programmes.

Assuring and driving up the quality of services is essential if screening is to achieve the intended benefits to population health, while minimising unintended harms to those taking part.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, dynamic and effective team member for the Screening QA Service South based at the Rivergate office.

This is a clinically ring-fenced post and the successful candidate will need to be on the NMC register or equivalent.

As a QA Advisor you will be required to support the Senior QA Advisor(s) in the delivery of a comprehensive programme of quality assurance capable of maintaining and further developing, effective high quality screening throughout the area.

Some of the main duties and responsibilities will be to:

  • support local antenatal and newborn screening services, providing advice while building and managing relationships with local, regional and national stakeholders
  • support the development of policy, methods and tools for quality assurance, participating in national projects
  • provide support to local antenatal and newborn screening services through regular communications and meetings, including attending formal governance meetings and supporting training and networking opportunities
  • contribute to screening incident identification, management and resolution for antenatal and newborn screening services
  • manage visits and reviews of local antenatal and newborn screening services liaising with professional and clinical advisors, collecting evidence and writing reports

The post holder will be able to make decisions or recommendations, when required, on difficult and complex issues. They will be capable of working to tight and often changing timescales and knowing when and how to seek advice from Senior QA Advisors. The postholder will be able to negotiate on difficult and controversial issues including performance and change, researching best practice, interpreting its relevance and identifying processes which could be implemented successfully to achieve system reform.

The postholder will be a highly organised, skilled communicator. They will have an understanding of the principles of population-based screening programmes in the UK with extensive knowledge of specialist areas and experience of working in screening programmes, in a quality assurance role or in a related field.
