  • For posts on PHE Civil Service terms and conditions, on appointment the salary is normally the minimum point (see salary range above). This will be dependent on the successful candidate’s current salary and terms and/or equivalent experience. The Civil Service pay structure and progression is different from NHS Agenda for Change, most local authority pay grades and other systems that have annual pay increments.   • For clinically ringfenced AfC or Medical/Dental posts, you must obtain the correct professional registration to be appointed. The pay will follow the AfC or Medical & Dental terms & conditions. You may be asked to provide evidence on previous service whilst we are conducting pre-employment checks to determine starting salaries.

Any moves across the Civil Service may have implications on your ability to carry on claiming childcare vouchers.

Given the nature of the work of PHE, as a Category 1 department, you may be required in an emergency, if deemed a necessity, to redeploy to another role at short notice. You may also be required to work at any other location, within reasonable travelling distance of your permanent home address, in line with the provisions set out in your contract of employment.

ICT Engineer

Information and Communication Technology department

The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Department provides business-critical systems and services to PHE business users at all locations at which PHE staff work. ICT has primary responsibility for technical infrastructure and the corporate services running upon it. ICT has staff at a number of locations throughout PHE.

Job Summary

ICT Engineer’s will work within a specified geographical area to provide technical expertise in the configuration and implementation of PCs and PC networks within the PHE systems environment. This role will be the principle point of contact with PHE users to provide the support, guidance and advice to allow users to work on the PHE network without disruption. The role holder will assist in the configuration and connection of end user devices to PHE internal networks so as to gain access to all relevant network facilities, so as to support the achievement of PHE business objectives. They will also support the Lead and Senior Engineers in any system implementations or incidents as directed.

Main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • To assist the Lead and Senior Engineers in providing a high quality of customer service and support that will ensure that all PHE staff are able to access PHE ICT services as required, using properly configured and reliable devices
  • Ensure that all PHE users in their local area receive a consistent level of support, working within agreed service levels as necessary, which minimizes the time for identifying and fixing user reported problems
  • Configuring and commissioning laptop hardware and software as required. Supporting network components as required, to maximize the availability of PHE facilities to users
  • Administration of user accounts for network access
  • Ensuring the provision of support and service to all customers during scheduled hours
  • To conduct such work as directed by line management consistently with departmental standards and to agreed time scales
  • To comply with Departmental requirements for staff management activities, including the reporting of all absences and completion of Performance Development processes

Option 3 – External

Open to all external applicants (anyone) from outside the Civil Service (including by definition internal applicants).

If you are external to the Civil Service, you will take up the post on a Fixed Term appointment, if you are an existing Civil Servant, based outside of PHE, you will take up the post as a loan and if you are an existing PHE member of staff, you will take up the post as either a level transfer or a temporary promotion as per PHE’s Pay and Grading policy. If you are an existing Civil Servant, (in PHE or elsewhere) you must have prior agreement from your Line Manager before applying for this post.
