Lead BMS Virology – 37.5 hrs per week 

The Virology Department at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey (Berkshire Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS), has a vacancy for a full time Lead BMS to work in the COVID section of the Virology Laboratory.  The department is large and busy pathology department serving the five hospitals that make up Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS).  BSPS is formed by St Peter’s Hospital Chertsey, Royal Surrey County Hospital, Frimley Park Hospital, Wexham Park Hospital and Royal Berkshire Hospital.  It currently provides diagnostic pathology services for these five hospitals and the surrounding GPs serving a population of over 2 million people.  Current activity for BSPS is approximately 23 million tests a year with a workforce of 670 staff.  The laboratory is UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 and is well equipped with a number of analysers.  These include Abbott Architect, Hologic Panther and Panther Fusion, Diasorin Liaison, Vidas, Elite InGenius. 

We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and well-motivated BMS with appropriate qualifications and/or relevant experience to join the leadership team of the Infection & Immunity Sciences (I&IS) department for Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS).

You will, with the Deputy General Manager, be responsible for the organisation and performance of all aspects of the COVID-19 service established this year within BSPS. 

 You must be keen to embrace new ways of working and develop your knowledge and skills in order to grow in the role. You will be working with the I&I senior managers and with Clinical colleagues at all BSPS sites to ensure a co-ordinated and effective service is provided by best use of staff and resources to continue to provide a service to UKAS ISO 15189 standards.  You will also be working with the Virology Lead BMS to also implement, improve and develop the COVID-19 testing strategy as part of the national response to the COVID pandemic. You will on occasion be required to work at other network sites for meetings or training to maintain quality, training and service requirements

You will need to be a fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science and have substantial post registration experience including significant experience at a senior level; experience working across a network would also be beneficial.  This experience must include health and safety, audits, appraisal and staff development and UKAS 15189 standards and quality.
