What is the Transformation unit?

The Transformation Unit is a fundamentally different organisation to many other NHS services. We provide tailored Internal Consultancy services, by the NHS for the NHS, in a more cost-effective way than other commercial consultancies.

Created in 2012 to provide support to Greater Manchester, the Transformation Unit has expanded and now has a significant client base throughout the Northwest, as well as nationally. The Transformation Unit is governed by a standalone Board and is hosted by Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.

The Transformation Unit works with clients to ensure that change is delivered within a strategic context and drives forward new thinking in how public services can be delivered, to be more effective, more efficient and achieve better outcomes for patients and service users.

What is the role?

We are looking to recruit an ambitious and experienced senior project manager. The post holder must be an enthusiastic, proactive and self-assured individual who can demonstrate significant experience of programme / project leadership, and a desire to gain experience of clinical service transformation and implementation. As a Transformation Consultant, the post holder will support the Transformation team to ensure that programmes and projects within the TU’s portfolio are planned and manged effectively.

Amongst the role’s key responsibilities are:

  • Manage projects and programmes within the Transformation Unit portfolio, providing leadership and direction to ensure delivery on time and to desired quality.
  • Plan and execute engagement with clinicians to understand the case for change, develop future models of care and implement change.
  • Provide project and change management expertise to the planning, execution and implementation of projects and programmes.
  • Manage key relationships with clinicians and others.
  • Provide advice, support, and guidance to the junior project managers in the team.
  • Create and oversee development of project documentation including business cases.
  • Chair and lead meetings and events. Deliver presentations to a range of audiences.
  • Deputise for the Deputy Director as required.

The job requires an individual who can take the initiative, coupled with the ability to stay focused on results despite the changeable nature of working in a health care environment. Self-assurance and the confidence to purposely drive toward results while constantly problem-solving and engaging the commitment of others is essential; as is a leadership style that is firm and goal oriented, and yet motivates and engages others in an enthusiastic way.

Finally, while the job requires the ability to act independently, with a sense of urgency and the confidence to handle a variety of challenges; a full commitment to the success of the Transformation Unit and high standards of achievement are expected in this leadership position.

Vacancy Location

Due to Covid-19, all roles are temporarily Home Based. From April 2021 the postholder is likely to have access to a range of office locations provided by the Midlands and Lancashire Commissioning Support Unit.

Employee base will be flexible depending on business needs – current locations are Leyland, Liverpool, Chester, Stoke-on-Trent, Derby, Leicester, and West Bromwich.

The NHS Transformation Unit predominantly operates in the North West of England. However, the post holder may be required to work at any establishment at any time throughout the duration of their contract, normally within the UK, or as set out under the terms of their contract.
