Genetic Technologist

Post: Permanent, full time (37.5hrs per week)

The Oxford Genetics laboratories, comprising the Oxford Regional Genetics Laboratories (ORGL) and the Oxford Molecular Haematology Laboratory, provide a comprehensive range of cytogenetic, molecular cytogenetic and molecular genetic investigations for both rare disease and acquired disorders (solid tumour and haematological malignancy). The laboratories are active in research & development and translational projects and collaborate closely with many of the genetic research leaders in Oxford as well as the Oxford Biomedical Research centre.

The Oxford Genetics Laboratories are part of the West Midlands, Oxford & Wessex Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH), one of 7 GLHs recently established to deliver NHS England’s National Genomic Medicine Service.

The laboratories are accredited as a training centre for Healthcare Scientist and Higher Specialist training.

We have a vacancy for a Band 4 Genetic Technologists to work with other members of the scientific and technical teams to deliver a high quality laboratory diagnostic genetics service. The post will be based at the Regional Genetics Laboratory at the Churchill Hospital.

Genetic Technologists undertake practical laboratory work and associated housekeeping under the supervision of experienced Genetic Technologists or Clinical Scientists. The successful candidates will be required to perform laboratory duties on a rotational basis across all technical areas of the laboratory and will have practical experience and knowledge of molecular genetics techniques .e.g. PCR-based assays or specific experience in a diagnostic genetics laboratory.

You will be interested in laboratory technology and have at least 6 months experience of laboratory techniques relevant to genetics in a workplace-based environment. The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a flexible approach to work, manual dexterity, good organisational skills, accuracy, consistency and attention to detail.

We are currently working towards reconfiguring delivery of our services along patient care pathways and as such the successful candidate will be expected to work within and across the teams of the department in the future.
