Specialist Clinical Pharmacist, Gastroenterology

Pharmacy services at Northampton General Hospital are delighted to offer a specialist pharmacist post in gastroenterology joining our team supporting the Medicine & Urgent Care Division.

The NGH pharmacy team comprises some 120 staff in diverse roles across the organisation. Our clinical staff includes a well-established medicines management team and we are progressing the development of specialty posts offering the opportunity to work alongside a multi-disciplinary team. These services are well supported by our high-cost medicines, information, formulary and safety team and our support functions are technically led including dispensary, stores and distribution, aseptics and quality assurance.

This senior role is a vital part of our service to Medicine & Urgent Care and the post holder will have the opportunity to specialise in gastroenterology with some hepatology input. Following the successful implementation of Dedicated Ward Pharmacist we have been encouraged to roll out to other medical wards and this will be an area that will benefit from this service to improve flow , patient experience and improve safety. We are keen all clinical pharmacists undertake an independent prescribing qualification . A completed clinical pharmacy diploma is desirable but we will consider candidates who are working towards the qualification or who have equivalent skills and experience.

You will also have the opportunity to advise and educate pharmacy, medical and nursing staff and contribute to the development of policies, guidelines and procedures. For the right individual there are opportunities to gain experience supervising pre-registration pharmacists under the guidance of our pre-registration facilitator and as experience is gained , the opportunity to develop supervisory and coaching skills in diploma training.

This role involves contributing to pharmacy ward rounds giving you the opportunity to interact with patients on a one-to-one level. You will be responsible for the quality surveillance of prescribing, reconciliation of medicines on admission and discharge, contributing to audit and patient education to support the Trust agenda. The hospital is introducing an electronic prescribing and medicines administration system and has a new acute admission unit to accommodate the growth in population.
