Band 6 Rotational Senior Physiotherapist

We are looking to recruit a motivated and dynamic physiotherapist to join our varied Band 6 senior physiotherapist rotation at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Rotations are eight to ten months in length and staff are supported by highly specialised Band 7 therapists in all clinical areas including:

Cardiorespiratory medicine including ITU

The respiratory team support the respiratory and cardiology wards leading the acute non-invasive ventilation service, a newly expanded intensive care unit where you will be involved with leading weaning and rehabilitation plans. You will gain experience in treating acutely unwell patients and managing a complex caseload, including patients requiring non-invasive ventilation and with tracheostomies. You will learn advanced skills such as taking blood gases, carry out long-term and ambulatory oxygen and home non-invasive ventilation assessments, and input into the non-invasive ventilation support service, providing expert advice to A&E and other non-specialist areas.

General Surgery

You will be responsible for the management of two general surgical wards, surgical assessment unit and a specialist bariatric unit, treating patients who have undergone colorectal, upper GI, hepatobiliary, urology, gynaecology and vascular procedures. You will be a member of the Enhanced Recovery team, facilitating speedy recovery with safe and timely discharge.

Frailty and Medicine

You will be working in a team which provides highly responsive care and timely decision making to prevent admissions and facilitate early safe discharges. This team covers a range of areas from ED through to general elderly medical wards. Therapists will work closely with senior staff and MDT colleagues, to assess and treat patients, and plan for their timely and appropriate discharge.


Ashford and St Peter’s have a Hyper-Acute/Acute Stroke Unit and Stroke Rehabilitation Unit. You will have an opportunity to develop neurological assessment and treatment skills working in an integrated and dynamic therapy team that is responsive to patients’ needs, ensuring they follow the stroke pathway.

Trauma and Orthopaedics

The unit treats a variety of patients that require surgery such as joint replacements, including revisions, hip, knee, shoulder, foot, ankle and spinal surgery. The orthopaedic team also provide physiotherapy post application of Ilizarov frames for trauma and bone non- union. There is an excellent multi-disciplinary team working relationship with involvement in the SW London and Surrey Major Trauma Network.

Within all rotations you will work with external multi-agencies to facilitate discharges.

Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust encourage the involvement of staff in research and development. There will be opportunities to gain research experience in a number of ways; through service evaluation and audit, data collection, and involvement in clinical trials and studies. You will be supported to participate in service and quality improvement initiatives and take opportunities to present work within the organisation and at wider forums.

Applicant requirements

Ashford and St Peter’s offers a seven day service across some specialities and you will be expected to support this on a rota system and participate in the respiratory on call rota.

It is expected that you will have physiotherapy experience in a variety of settings; having worked in an acute hospital in different clinical areas including stroke, respiratory, older people, orthopaedics, surgery, and acute medicine.

You should have skills in clinical reasoning and communication and be confident whilst working in a busy multi-disciplinary hospital environment.
