Job Title - Apprentice Healthcare Assistant

Base - Stroud General Hospital

Salary - £10,132 per annum/ £5.18 per hour

Hours per week - 37.5 hours

Fixed Term contract over 15 months

The Level 2 Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship at Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience and training in community hospital settings.

An apprenticeship is suitable for anyone who has an interest in pursuing a career within healthcare as well as gaining a Level 2 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare. There are excellent opportunities to develop your career further with access to further apprenticeship programmes involving a dedicated career pathway that could lead onto becoming a Registered Nursing Associate or Registered Nurse, whilst being fully paid with no university fees

Healthcare assistants play a vital role in the care of patients; working under the direction of healthcare professionals they take care of the day-to-day needs of patients by providing help with personal care, meals and mobility. They also carry out a range of housekeeping duties as well as performing patient observations such as taking a patient’s temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure.

Healthcare assistants are expected to be friendly, caring and sensitive with the confidence to communicate with patients and healthcare professional colleagues.

The job of healthcare assistant is a physical one. Daily responsibilities include:

  • To assist in the delivery of high quality patient care, promoting rehabilitation and independence under the supervision of qualified staff
  • Use a degree of initiative to ensure patient’s personal needs are met, and the patient’s condition is reported to qualified staff.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy environment, by ensuring orderliness and hygiene and safety of the ward/department
  • Gain competencies in skills specific to the role and department

At all times ensuring a high standard of care is delivered to patient’s carers and visitors and a kind, caring and professional attitude whilst considering dignity, privacy, cultural and religious needs is maintained.

Apprentices will be expected to work a shift pattern this will include early morning, evening, weekend working and bank holidays. The maximum working week is 37.5 hours / week; each shift pattern includes an unpaid break of 30 minutes.

The workshops are held once a month in Gloucester and the successful candidates would have to travel to Gloucester to attend.

This post requires the post holder to be able to undertake all statutory and mandatory training and post holders must be able to undertake physical interventions. Fitness for physical intervention will be assessed by Occupational Health.
