  • For posts on PHE Civil Service terms and conditions, on appointment the salary is normally the minimum point (see salary range above). This will be dependent on the successful candidate’s current salary and terms and/or equivalent experience. Given the nature of the work of PHE, as a Category 1 department, you may be required in an emergency, if deemed a necessity, to redeploy to another role at short notice. On 18 August 2020, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care announced plans to establish the National Institute for Health Protection and consult on the best future options for strengthening health improvement and other public health functions in the wider system. Public Health England and many of its employees will be in scope for transition to new organisations in Spring 2021. The Research Department in Microbiology Services, of which MS Porton has approximately 200 staff, perform a range of research activities, including high containment level work. The department’s work covers a broad range of projects involving the development and evaluation of interventions into a range of infectious diseases e.g. haemorrhagic fevers, arboviruses, and bacterial agents including anthrax and plague. The Diagnostic Support Team reviews, develops and implements diagnostic assays and evaluates equipment for use in the Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL) as part of the panel of frontline tests and/or support outbreak responses.

An opportunity has arisen for a senior scientist to join the project team and/or provide serological/molecular expertise in a team responsible for the delivery of the scientific and technical activities within the project team. Ensure delivery of new/improved/refined diagnostic assays for use in RIPL as well as training and surge capacity in the event of an outbreak.

Duties include:

  1. Implement and utilise a range of molecular and serological methods in support of all diagnostic development activities for ACDP HG 2/3/4 pathogens within the project aimed to ensure project targets are met.
  2. Take responsibility for the provision of reagents and consumables required for the project and documented storage of materials generated.
  3. Lead members of the project team or project area to identify, evaluate and adapt new diagnostic technologies where appropriate and to ensure that the project operates to a high scientific standard using current methods.
  4. Establish links and collaborations within and outside the PHE as necessary to benefit the project and/or department including submission of proposals.
  5. Take lead responsibility for the supervision and training of junior staff allocated to the project and RIPL in specific areas of expertise.
  6. Provide reports through analysis of data using software and databases as necessary, to meet project targets and lead on preparation of presentations and publications.
